HH Scott 443 Quadraphonic receiver? It's a mystery to me!

Member Jim W. recently picked up one of these, and asked me to Google up some info on it... He moved and is still waiting for his internet to be installed.

Damned if I can't find any reference at all to a 443, or even any HH Scott Quad gear. I have hunted around till I went cross-eyed, so I guess that it is time to ask here if anyone knows about this unit.

Jim says it says solid state on it, HH Scott, not EH or just plain Scott, and the serial # is 00680841, That's all I have for info.

Sorry, no pics, but he will bring it to this weekends New England Hootenanny.

Any insight and info on this unit would be appreciated!

Hi,

This unit was built after HH Scott went into receivership and was purchased by a German firm. 1974-1978 vintage. Likely made in Japan

Scott 443 quadraphonic

birddog,

The H H Scott 443 was introduced about 1972, just at the time when Scott was on its last legs and about to be sold. Here is what I found in the 1972 Stereo Directory:

"H. H. Scott - Two AM/Stereo FM receivers are being introduced by this manufacturer. The Model 443 will be rated at 15 W/ch rms into 8 ohms. The IHF power bandwidth is 25-20,000 Hz. and the harmonic distortion at rated output is 0.5%. The FM sensitivity is 2.5 uV and the capture ratio is 2.5dB. The Model 443 contains the manufacturer's special 4-channel "Quadrant" circuit to convert 2-channel stereo to simulated 4-channel program material. This unit also has an output strapping facility to double the power output per channel when operated in the 2-channel stereo mode. ... This unit will sell for $319.90."

Scott's other "Quadrant" receiver was the Model 444 rated at 25 W/ch with a suggested retail price of $449.90.

My guess is that this is a pretty rare receiver, given that Scott was in trouble. The “Quadrant” circuit should make this great for playing ordinary two-channel stereo media to get a quadraphonic sound. Jim W. has a pretty nice and maybe rare unit. I hope that he can make good use of it.

Thank you both for the great info!

I will pass that on to Jim, since he still is waiting for his internet connection to be hooked up!

birddog,

Please ask Jim to post a photo once his internet connection is back up. I would love to see a good photo of one of the real Scott's last products.

Thanks.

I think he said he was bringing it to the NE/Mass get-together tomorrow, I'm sure someone will have a camera!

Hi,

Thanks for the interesting information on this very late HH Scott product. I am wanting any information, catalogue scans, pictures or anything else pertaining to 1965-1973 HH Scott products. I am interested in one day beginning a history and information site on late HH Scott equipment. I am also interested in dealer recollections and recollections from those who worked for HH Scott company especially in this time frame. You'll be credited for any information given. It's time early solid state HH Scott has a web site and gets the respect it deserves.

The HH Scott 443 was among the stash of gear I purchased from "Jim W." the other day. Jim told me it was rare but not that it was like the last of the Mohegans.
Attached are some pictures for historical interest.
While I'd heard of Scott gear frankly it was off my radar screen. The asthetics always struck me as late 50s - early 60s modern. I guess before my time (slightly).
While the outside of the 443 didn't impress me and it's a bit dirty the inside is virtually spotless and the build quality is quite impressive. Take a look-see at the pix.
I hooked this up for a quickie test and the major functions seem to be working fine. The dial glass is loose and the rear balance pot seems to be jammed. Lights work and seems to receive FM just fine.
Oh, and made in the USA!
JimB
