Hi FI Analog Test LP Question

I recently received my very first TT and spent Saturday morning setting it up (to include cart. mounting...what an experience) Last evening I subjected it to the HI-Fi News Analog Test LP and it passed with flying colors....but I have one question. The track that tests the azimuth......The tone is equal in both chanels in stereo and when I flip my amp to mono I can Just Barely hear a whisper of the tone...My question is, is there supposed to be absolute silence when when the amp is switched to mono or is just a hint of whisper acceptable? I am aware that there are more suphisticated means of measuring azimuth....ie volt meter. Stupid question, but if you dont know you just dont know...where do you place the test terminal of the volt meter to test it in this fasion?

John, In a perfect world you would have silence. You really need an oscilloscope for that test to be effective. You could measure and adjust. Probably the best will be your ears and adjust your tonearm for max null. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. I am aware of the oscilliscope...something I do not and will not have access to. There is a way to use a volt meter in liu of the oscilliscope(I know that its not as accurate but is more accurate than by ear) If anyone could comment on the actual procedure and the mathmatics involved I would greatly appreciate it.
