this is my experimental system to see how house gear dose in a car...

portable cd player ( for remote level )-----if it gets stolen i wont cry.

I gotta say thats a Interesting idea. lol I would of never tried to do such a thing, but I support you on your idea! maybe you should figure out some way to mount a radio near your dash like maybe the part under it so you have some kinda easy control over it? my car on upgrading the sound system I took the normal rout lol I got a new Deck to replace the dying factory radio, a Sony Xplod. got some new pioneer speakers for the fronts, 4 x6's and got some cheaper more less no name brand 4 way 6 x 9's for the rear, and so far I hooked up one rather old amp for the front speakers, and latter I will hook up this other old car amp as old as me for the rear speakers. lol :)

Hillbilly boredom at its best, Duck tape is all you need for some "Tennessee Pride":D
Seriously it is interesting but not for me, hope you never have an accident as those items will all become a potential fatal projectile.

I'd be suprised if 90% of us didn't stick some home speakers in the rear footwells in high school, but what you're doing takes it to a new level.

Being a motorcycle rider and a highway worker as well you can color me unimpressed. Distractions in a car like that are death sentences for guys like me. Plenty of time to play with all that great gear sitting in your home.

The only problem is car audio gear is designed to withstand the harsh environment of a car (hot, cold, dry, humid) and then you have the sun shining in the windows. For a short time it should be great (did it with my JBLs and a T-amp since I was transporting the JBLs anyway).

My concern as well. An ex-coworker was nearly killed by some loose objects when he had a car accident. Many months in rehab and still walks with cane like an old man and his hands don't work very well. This was years ago and he'll never really get better than he is now, barring a miracle.

In HS I would help my buddy schlep his big ole home speakers to the back of his Toyota hatchback for weekend 'fun'. It was very ugly but we loved the sound. We would cruise the streets and everynow and then stop for an impromptu rave, just pop the hatch and turn it up. Get that gear strapped down, and if you care about the electronics find a strong UPS to go between the gear and the power inverter. Of course you will find that the UPS beeps everytime you either turn it up, or when you are at idle, keep your eyes on the road.
BTW
In response to "Distractions in a car like that are death sentences for guys like me" distractions are only one of a long list of 'death sentences' (your term) to two wheelers, good luck out there. Everytime I see someone texting while driving I give them a little honk just to see their reaction, It's usually an OMG what's about to happen look that I hope gives them some cause to rethink their acctivity.

I remember having big house speakers in the back seat of my Z-28 Camaro.... They were just sitting upright and sounded great...

My father always says: "There is too much people in this world with way too much time in their hands".

Have you thought about getting a job? Or, if you are retired or already have a job; have you thought about a part-time, something like checking receipts at Walmart's exit door?

My Toyota pickup has a crappy radio, not even cassette I could use, so for music I cobbled together the following: a nice sounding Mitsubishi 60 watt power amp (it is a 12 volt car unit),that I found in a thrift store for $3, with the cigarette lighter as power source. I rigged it to a mini jack adapter so I can use my mp3 player as a source (or anything with an 1/8 headphone jack and a volume control). Since there's not many places to put speakers in the standard cab of a 96 Tacoma, and speakers for the radio are already in the door, speakers for my music system are a pair of
Minimus 550 Pros or something like that (about half the size of Minimus 7s), behind the seat. I tried Minimus 7s, but they sounded muddy from behind the seat, and didn't fit back there too easy either.
It suits me fine since investing in a real car audio system is not on my priority list. I used to have a T-amp in there, but it didn't have enough oomph to compete with the cab noise (sounded great while parked, though!)

I agree with the safety concerns that a number of people have brought to light regarding this topic. Anything of substantial weight needs to be secured in a way it doesn't become a projectile. Protect yourself, stereorob -- you may only get one chance to do so.

As for PR Audio's comment, I feel this is simply an offensive comment that does not belong on AK. There is an air of civility here where members treat each other with respect. That post is not a reflection of this concept.

I've been through newsgroups and forums where a virtual bludgeon was a necessity. That gets old, and this isn't one of those forums.

Leave the ad hominem attacks for other ventures.

John

I stuck a marantz 2216 and JBL 2600s on the floor in the backseat of my '66 Buick Lesabre. Decent power inverter and it was fun for a day.

Wonder what a little SET amp and some purpose-built horns would do? :D

ive gone vintage!!

ok so last week i swapped out the crappy black plastic sony for a real receiver!!
a slammin sansui 3000a!!! this thing WHAMS!!!:thmbsp:
