Hi Fi VCR In Stereo System?

It must have been an odd machine. I do not need a video signal. If the machine is out of adjustment then it would have a buzzing sound.

I guess we’ll never know.
 
I got a modern Magnavox DVD recorder/VCR hooked up to my system and use it for listening to DVDs. It was purchased for the ongoing project of archiving lots of VHS tapes with holidays, birthdays, weddings, etc. It's also hooked to the TV by HDMI. At some point, it will come out to be replaced by a real CD player.

No use of the VCR for audio, though.
 
Specs of domestic VCR might be impressive. But it needs that mandatory compander, which is like dbx NR. Sometimes it pumps and breathes. Cueing is inconvenient. Reliability of it is also not up to audio standards. Basically has every cassette headache. Long play, get a music server.

There's no doubt it can be done and work well, if not pretty darn good, from an audio perspective.

I think more the point is whether in this day and age it's worth the hassles/limitations which have been mentioned by others. To me it is not.

You could say the exact same thing about anything vintage nowadays,wherever it be a TT,CDP,TOTL Nakamichi cassette deck,or RTR etc.
I suppose at the end of the day,it all boils down to your own personal preference of either analogue or digital/computer sound and/or recording techniques.
One thing is for sure... I not only luv the analogue sound of the JVC S-VHS deck,but also it's lovely looks and build quality too,sadly of-which you just don't tend to see no more.
 
Are you guys speaking of hifior stereo? I thought they were the same but found out not so. I just recently was about to send to the thrift some 50 or so tapes and a couple of decks. Reading the manual of the hifi model, I found it records in mono but plays stereo. The other is labeled stereo on the front and the many manual states it records in stereo. I put aside the tapes and stereo unit and plan to try it out. My r2r does not fit into my plans of the future while the deck might if it records and plays back decently.

As for tapes, I have seen new ones in the thrift almost every time I went in and prices at under a dollar but, never thought of picking any up. I have about a dozen sitting never used and if the experiment works will start buying more. I suspect I will begin to use the system as I did the r2r and record my records and use the tape preserving the original disc.
 
IIRC "stereo" as related to VHS used a stereo edge track with the consequent poor quality caused by slow linear tape speed. HiFi for VHS used separate audio heads on the drum and the resulting helical scanning for high quality recording and playback.
 
Joe, thanks. Was never into the VHS format or even dvds. I'll give the 3 units I have (2 hifi 1stereo) and see which, if any are good enough. We bought these over the years thinking we would use them as well as a dvd and later a blu-ray player and between all, maybe 12 hours of total use.

Recently picked up a PS3 and never put a disc in it.
