Hi

I am a young canadian who is getting some old Hi-Fi equipment from my dad and I was wondering if you guys could help me out.

The turntable is a Garrard 401 dated 1968 on the original owners manual.

It has a Fairchild 280a tonearm that I know absolutely nothing about so any information is appreciated.

The amp is a Rotele Rx-454.

And I need some suggestions on speakers as the current ones are too big for my apartment.

Whereabouts are you ?? I have a set of B&W bookshelves that sound good !!
As far as the TT goes, I know Nada..... You'll find what you need to know here, or check out Vinylengine , pretty much all vintage turntable info is available.
 
I'm in Toronto, how many watt per channel are they? I don't want the neighbors to be complaining too much about the music.

I'm on a budget for speakers, as a student so what would be good.

First off Welcome to AK, thats a table and arm combination not usually seen. Classic gear for sure.

I suggest once your intro is done you head over to the general forums and pick a subject to narrow down
your questions.

Personally I find putting your location bellow your name is a great way to meet members that might be able to help out
and gives a perspective on regional pricing ect, but its of course your choice.

In Calgary.....
Wattage on speakers doesn't really mean that much, you can control the volume!
They would go loud enough to bug neighbors, but I've only listened to them at regular levels....

I have every intention of keeping the turntable in as good of shape as it is now. The only upgrade I'm thinking for now is a new cartridge, I don't know how old the Shure cartridge that's on it is. Maybe a new amp down the rod but theven current one seems to function.
 
Welcome from the other side of Canada. Sounds like there is similar activity going on both sides of the country. I just bought myself a CD player and my son jumped on the other one, ripped his system apart to rearrange everything and then tested it out by blasting me with Eminem.

Older book-shelf Polks made some great speakers. You might want to consider a pair.

As for the sound concern you mentioned, a pretty good pair of refurbished headphones that might be a Plan B.
