High-End HD Processor

Hi,

I'm searching for a HD processor, a high-end one, that is. The Japanese brands have so many of those, but none I've heard that is anywhere close to the McIntosh that I've heard, although currently not True HD.

Knowing that the processor, or a/v control centre is the central figure of the entire home theatre outfit, I don't mind spending more on it.

Can anyone advise?

Perhaps wait for the MX150 that is due out in August unless it gets postponed again...

If you mean a pre-pro that can decode all of the lossless HD audio formats as well as pass through or even upscale HD video, there are a number of processors out there right now that can very ably handle all of these duties and as long as they are handled in the digital domain, will probably do as good a job as anything that Mc currently has on the market (Onkyo, Classe, Anthem and Denon come to mind at prices from $1600 to $8000). The new MX150 will not upscale, leaving that for the source or display.

I've tried a couple, Onkyo, and Classe.... It does sound quite flat... The bullets aren't that real.

How's the Oppo Blu-Ray?

Your comment on the Classe surprised me.

The Oppo Blu-ray's HD audio is GREAT for my meager needs -- just playing SD-DVDs and Blu-ray DVDs using the analog outputs to my MX134 and its video capabilities are equally great whether playing BD movies or upscaling SD-DVD movies. Sorry that I cannot comment on SACD. Also, it is extremely fast. The only negative thing I can say about it is that while its remote does everything it is supposed to do, it just does not have the appearance of high end. Given a second chance, I would still purchase it again.:thmbsp:

I look forward to feeding its audio and video output via HDMI to a MX150.

I have the Classe SSP 800, currently letting my Denon 3800 BD do the decoding on HD Codecs until the new dual board is released for itin the next month or so. I am thrilled with the sound out of this unit and combined with the MC303 think it is a great combo for my B&W 803D,HTM2D & 805s. Lots of detail with great bass and fantastic midrange.

I know this is belated.

I'm now a proud listener of an MX150. Excellent for 2 channel and excellent for home theatre. The room perfect feature is wonderful for all types of room setups. you can trust that it really optimizes whatever system you've got.

So thanks for your posts!

I have an MVP 881BR but I am only using it with my MX135. I do like the MVP881 BR. It plays all kinds of CDs. SACDs, DVDs, and SADVDs. It is very versatile. I think it is great but I don't know how much better it would be with the MX150. I should say that my TV is not to bad though; a Sony 70 inch XBR 1080. Check out my profile picture.

Mike, have you tried the MVP 881 BR?

Nope -- not putting Mc down at all, but the Oppo BDP-83SE has surpassed all of my expectations (price/performance ratio hard to beat along with great customer support) and now Oppo is bringing out the BDP-95 as an audiophile (balanced stereo outputs) and videophile player which does the streaming that the BDP-83SE did not do. The only drawback so far to the Oppo for me is it just does not look like a McIntosh...

Scottsmrnyc, nice set up! I've seen the MVP 881 BR and MX150 setup. Picture wise, it's real good- extremely natural, amazingly clear, it's so great it's hard to describe. The 881 is more expensive i guess, but in all fairness, it's the best video I've seen with a BR Player!

Mike, Oppo's great, I've seen the Compli Blu too, and really both are great- there is a significant difference in quality- dark levels... and just the look of the picture. The 881 just has that something extra over those guys in picture. Worth having a look at.

There's a difference when complementing the 881 with the MX150. The 881 direct to a 3-chip projector is bright. With the MX150, it's probably perfect in it's class. Wow, the thought of it... I ought to see what I can do to audition a MDLP2 with that setup!

You know Mike and Scott, I think we go back to our rooms with a huge smile on our faces every single time we turn on the system to enjoy our media. Amazing stuff every darn time. =)

Just out of curiosity, do you use the native remotes or do you have a universal remote?

IMO, the Mx119 is a bargain on the used market. It has the same analog section as the C45/46 so it sounds GREAT. just get a HDMI switcher if you need that stuff and you're set!

I still use 8 different remotes for the various pieces -- tried the Pronto long ago and a year ago, the Harmony 880 (both were donated to Goodwill) and I am old and old-fashioned and prefer to turn on most pieces separately (OK, turn on the MX150 and let it turn on the amps) and NOT just press "play DVD" and everything fires up and off we go. Most remotes are designed for macros or what amounts to macros. Maybe there will be a decent app for my Android phone. I am just too tight (retired teacher) to pop for a sophisticated $3K remote system that controls everything in the house. Call me old-fashioned -- I don't even do social networking and look at the Facebook pages of my daughters or grandkids even though I am no noob when it comes to technology -- was an IT director over three networks and 400 PC's before I retired 7 years ago.
