High Pitched feedback from Sharp Cassette deck

Hi there, I was given a 70s Sharp RT-2500 cassette deck by my local library. It is beautiful and still works, however, whenever I press play, even without a cassette it creates a loud, high pitched feedback and the VU meters hit the ceiling. Can anyone help me out?

You need to clean the record/playback switch. Ideally you should open it up and spray electrical contact cleaner into the switch housing, but a quick fix that usually works is to put in a blank tape and repeatedly press record, then stop, then record, then stop, etc., a bunch of times to clean the contacts.
