Hip Hop Instrumentals

hey all, this thread is dedicated to pure hip hop instrumentals.. which I've found myself listening to quite frequently over past few months.

Obviously there are the greats like J. Dilla, madlib/doom, lord finesse, RZA, etc which are more than welcome, but I've been focused on more underground talent from all over the world.

post whatever album you've been into!!

I have a large soft spot for more jazzy type instrumentals, and there are some recent underground artists that are really killing it with recent production, using really clean samples and out of the box drumkits etc to make some really unique music.

ease of access to production software and the internet had caused a lot of people to make lfies out of production that have never stood in a real recording studio. the mastering and mixing is very impressive as well, nothing you would expect from a "amateur"

most of these artists use soundcloud/bandcamp. bandcamp actually supports lossless streaming as well as FLAC/WAV lossless downloads, sometimes for free!

lossless streaming on bandcamp is free so check these guys out!!

FYI- if bandcamp says "name your price" you can say $0 and download it for free!!

here's some of my favorite tapes as of recent

astrological- dude from BC, canada. super chill production, very jazzy. really cool samplea and his music is quite mesmorizing. all his stuff is good, my favorite tapes from him are "Far Far Away" and "Living Fossils" but all his stuff is good IMO.

fav tracks- Kudzu Vine, Lemon Tree Bath

https://astrological.bandcamp.com/album/living-fossils

fav tracks- Rush Of Colour, Afternoon Cruise

swimful butterfly- this dude is seriously talented, hip hop producer from china. his music is so clean and just perfect to vibe with. varies style immensly but plays a lot of the classic roland 808 drumkit. His style is slow and very orchestral on some tracks and you may not even consider a traditional hip hop beat, but he mixes so many things all into one and I LOVE his work. all his stuff is free, both tapes are amazing

fav tracks- 馬路天使 (Street Angel), Surfing the Astral Plane

https://swimfulbuterfly.bandcamp.com/album/return-to-a-dream

fav tracks- 馬路天使二 (Street Angel Pt.II), Infinite Castle

shag- this guy is the closest to the traditional "hip hop instrumental" and draws a lot of parallels to madlib and J. dilla. dude has a grasp on what makes a great beat. samples are top notch and simply melodic. my favortie projects from him are "Don't Mind Me" and "Hermit". This dude takes his art super seriously and it shows. His beats on "Don't Mind Me" have become classics for me. seriously inspirational stuff

fav tracks- Metamorphosis, Old Before My Time

http://shag.bandcamp.com/album/hermit

fav tracks- Gold Dust, If You Change Your Mind

Loud Lord- producer out of chicago, IL. This dude is the most non conventional of the bunch, but I LOVE his beats, mostly trap style with heavy emphasis on the 808s. It's not jazzy in some of his tapes but the musicality is there. he has a very unique style with many different samples and honestly really up beat melodies. His bass will make your woofers move for real, and offers atypical production from the linear "trap beat" style. when was the last time you heard a legit jazz sax and flute instruments on a "trap beat"?? A lot of his songs have very wide and deep imaging with great and subtle samples. Listen to "ascension" on kush krazy 2.. I love this dude haha

fav tracks- Ascension (Prod. Loud Lord x MadBliss), Kush Krazy 2 Intro (Prod. Loud Lord)

https://loudlord.bandcamp.com/album/kush-krazy-3

fav tracks- Stress Free Interlude (prod. Loud Lord x TDeezy), Norf Carolina Remix (prod. Loud Lord x Mr. Sisco)

V'don- producer out of harlem, NY. made a name for himself producing for a lot underground hip hop artists in the tri state area. On point beats and similar to shag in he represents the old school of thought in beat making. This dude is seriously underrated and gives people a lot of reasons to like him, the flow on beats is effortless and some are just straight grimy lo fi that reminds me a lot of some madlib/doom

favorite beat tape by him is "The Opiate"- it really is awesome

fav tracks- Cake, Product of the Block

let me know what you think and what other types of hip hop instrumentals or even just jazzy instrumentals you like!!

It's a cool concept. I've heard a lot of tunes that started out pretty good and then some clown ruins it by rapping. How about some youtube embeds?

I've linked everything in a streamable no download format. you should be able to listen to everything I've linked by just clicking the large play button towards top of the screen. only issue with bandcamp is that they don't have a volume control. the music stream is lossless

Cool. My biggest connection to these kind of instrumentals is the Samurai Champloo OST (I've got a cd rip!)

Looking forward to checking these out tomorrow. Thanks ny
