Hitachi D-900 Cassette - Belt Replacement instructions

Let me start by saying I think this machine is worth the effort if is is otherwise in good shape. I have mine hooked to the McIntosh C-33, MC 2205 and various speakers including Vandersteen 1b and Dahlquist D-10’s, and it sounds fantastic.

That said, it is not a job for the timid or impatient. Others have said it is one of the worst decks to change the belts on. I don’t know, but looking at how unfriendly this one is, I would not disagree.

So it is probably helpful if you have dug around in some electronic gear before. I’m outlining the steps that I took, some tools I found helpful and with photos to try and show what I’m talking about at various stages. The belts in this deck had turned into some version of black tar goo. This required a lot of cleaning that was the most time consuming part of the job. It is messy and goes a bit slow, but satisfying when you finally are done. Seriously the cleaning took 50% of the time I spent on this.

Besides the regular assortment of standard tools, here are some that made this easier/possible:

  • Metal Dental Picks. I have a set of dental picks that I got from Harbor Freight that are handy for cleaning the goo off of pulleys and in particular, the hook shapes are great for pulling a belt over a pulley you would otherwise not be able to reach with your fat fingers. That is the situation with most of these pulleys.
  • Bamboo kabob skewers from the grocery store. The pointy end is good for cleaning the bottom of small pulley grooves, and the other end I carved into a flat scraper. The bamboo is a hardwood and it holds up well and the length helps to reach the flat capstan pulleys where my belts had fused onto the surface. On another skewer I carved a shallow notch into the flat so I could use it to push a belt down under the bottom of a pulley you could not otherwise reach.
  • Rubber gloves – use them like they are free. I realized that the goo just magically gets everywhere and after my gloves got even a little on them I was transferring it to all the wrong places. Just toss out the gloves often and put on another pair. Pro tip, use the blue ones. The black I usually wear made seeing how much tar was on them difficult.
  • Hemostats – I’ve had these so long I don’t remember where I got them, but they came in handy. Amazon has them of course. I would also sometimes grab a Q-tip with one to reach into a tight spot, or to retrieve a piece of old belt.
  • Alcohol (90% is best) and lots (and lots) of Q-tips, and shop paper towels.
  • Service manual from Hifi Engine.
  • White grease. Like a dab is all you’ll need.
  • A pack of small wire ties. The little ones.
This unit has 4 belts, and I got mine from Turntableneedles.com . They did not list a kit for this that I could find, but if you search on the Hitachi part numbers these belts come up and have fit perfectly. Both numbers are below for each belt. Total cost shipped to me was less than $30 USD.

Capstan Drive flat belt (#7 in service manual) Hitachi PN 6357146 Turntable Needles PN FBS10.2

Other drive belt (#8) Hitachi PN 6354031 Turntable Needles SMB6.5

Sensing Belt (#37) Hitachi PN 6354381 Turntable Needles SBO6.0

The first two on this list are drive belts on the back side of the transport. The last two are used to drive the counter on the front side of the machine. #39 goes on the back of a take-up spindle to an intermediate pulley and the other (#37) goes from the intermediate to the back of the counter.

Steps to get to the belts:

1 - Remover the top cover screws (two on each side, and three in the in the back. Note the one odd screw in the back goes into the top position.

After the cover is off, this is what I saw. I did not unsolder any wires, but I did unplug several connectors. You will be able to get to what you need by making enough slack in the wiring and gently pulling boards and wiring to various places out of the way. Now is when you start taking lots of photos. I shot over 45 photos in the course of this and found myself referring back to many of them when I was reassembling and trying to reroute cables to their original position or figure out how a bracket I took off actually fit. I also labeled every screw and kept them with brackets they held etc. There are not going to be that many but it really saves time on reassembly. An old muffin tin is a big help for this.

2- Cut all the wire ties you can find in the bundle over the transport and expose the “Plug Board” that sits on the top of the transport and under all the cables. You will be cutting the wire ties on the bundle of wire going to the left also, might as well get them now. There are two connectors on the Plug Board. Unplug and label them. You will remove this board later.

3- Remove the green ground wire coming from the back of the chassis to the bracket on the transport frame.

4 - Remove the two screws holding the “Control Board.” This is the vertical board behind the transport with a screw in each corner using fiber washers (on front and back sides of the board). This board also has a block of foam rubber at the top right glued to the board and a bracket. Separate the foam from the bracket. The bottom of the board is just tabbed into a slot in the plastic case.

5 - Pull this board up some and unplug and label the three connectors on the left edge. Now you can pull the board up and unwind the blue wire from around the cap that goes over to the 120V section (not sure if they are all like this but mine was). Unplug the connector near the middle of the board. Pay attention to the orientation as I think it would be possible to plug this in 180 deg out. You should be able to rotate and set this PCB over on the left side in the cassis out of the way. Cut any wire ties that are not letting you do this.

6 - Remove the back light for the cassette. It is the black plastic thing just behind the front cover, and is held by the screw on the right end and trapped by a bracket on the left. Remove the bracket with three screws completely. The light should now lift straight up and can be pulled to one side.

7- Now you can remove the “Plug Board.” It has a single screw on the left and a tab on the right. Pull it out of the way to see the rear cover of the transport.

8 - Now remove the bracket that the right side of the “Plug Board” was slotted into.

9- Now you can remove the Motor bracket with two screws on the vertical face of the bracket and if your flat belt is still on, unhook it from the motor pulley. Mine was not still attached and it had turned to goo wrapped around the motor drive pulley.

10- The rear plate with the flywheel supports are now exposed and two screws hold it at the top are run into white Nylon posts. The bottom of this bracket fits into a slot in the base (similar to the Control Board PCB). When you remove the left screw note the funny metal part that is free after you pull the screw out. No idea what this is for, but it went under another axle in the mechanism. See Photo below. With both screws removed lift out the back plate, and now you can see all of the capstan pulleys.

11- The transport should look like this now. You can see some old speaker wire I used to hold the bundle of cables out of the way. The motor is sitting in the lower right and the Control Board rotated and is laying to the left on top of the Main PCB.

12- Now the cleaning begins with alcohol, Q-tips , Kabob skewers and anything else you can think of to get all the crud off. I did find that a toothbrush worked well on the bottom-most part of the groove of the v-pulleys after most of the goop was removed. My only other tip is to be patient and just keep going over with more alcohol.

13- When everything is clean, you can route the new belts are shown below. The SMB_6.5 (8) must go on first working it over the large cast zinc capstan pulley then under the nylon idler and over the brass pulley near the top. Then the flat belt will also go over the large capstan pulley first and then the smaller brass capstan on the right.

14 - At this point you will put the back plate back on. I cleaned the dimple in the plastic bearings that the capstan axles fit into, and put a dab of white grease in them. Fit the plate into the slot at the bottom and run in the two screws at the top, remembering to get the funny bracket under the screw on the left side.

15 - Now put the motor back on. I did not try to hook the belt first as it is hard enough to start the screws without the tension. So screw in the bracket, notice the left side of the bracket fits into a white plastic standoff with a slot to hold the motor mount. Use some hook or dental tool to work the belt over the motor pulley. Rotate things and check for twists on both belts.

16- Have a beer.

Front Counter Belts number 37, 39.

1 - Before putting anything else back together, I worked on the two remaining belts that turn the counter. Spin the chassis around with the front towards you and pull off all of the knobs and lever switches covers. They all pull straight off. Get the two DCCS adjustment knobs also. The push buttons and the eject lever do not need to be removed.

2- Remove the Cassette Door clear cover. With the door open, the clear cover pulls up vertically over a detent. This is how you can get to the head later to clean them.

3- Now remove the front aluminum face plate. Remove the two screws on top at the far edges. On the bottom are three screws. They are not all the same. The left one is short, and the middle and far right are longer. Take photos of how the cables are run on the left side to the power switch and the mic and headphone jacks. Those will stay with the cover and the cables will have to be pulled about and unhooked from cable restraints. Now ease the cover forward and unhook any cable restraints that keep the faceplate from lifting up and laying on top.

4 - The two counter belts or what is left of them are visible now. The belt for the counter pulley goes on the back side of the intermediate pulley (the one in the middle) and the belt that goes on the cassette spindle is on the front side. The intermediate pulley is of course easy to clean, the one on the counter is harder and the one on the drive spindle is damn near impossible. It was particularly gummed up too. I looked at how to remove the black cover and door mechanism and decided it was not a good idea. I had better access from the top with the door closed and used Q-tips that I pinched to fit in the tight space. After I got as much as I could, I took a length of twine looped if with some difficulty around the pulley and then worked it and the pulley back and forth with loads of alcohol. I used about 20” of string and moved to clean sections as it got dirty. It worked great to get the last bit deep in the v-groove.

5 - When all the pulleys are clean you can put the two belts on. The longer belt goes to the counter and is first to go on. The shorter and last belt is a bit tricky. I put it on the drive spindle first by snaking it through the hole in the black cover plate and around the spindle and onto the pulley. Then using one of my hooks, reaching down from the top, hook it and pull it up and over to the intermediate pulley. Check all the spinning and watch the counter count!

6- You are in the home stretch. Have a beer.

7- If you want, now is a good time to DeoxIT the pots.

8- Work the front faceplate back on making sure to get all the cables for the power and jacks back in the right spot. You took photos right? It is fussy and tight here. The other tricky spot is the PCB over the VU meters. It sort of floats when the front is removed, but locks into some tabs as you slide it back on. Replace the two screws in the top and three in the bottom of the faceplate.

9- All the knobs and switch levers can go back on now.

10 - Spin the unit back around and replace the Bracket that holds the right of Plug Board with three screws.

11- Put the “Plug” board back in place and put in the one screw.

12 - Return the back light with the screw on the right and the bracket that clamps down the left end, and attach that bracket to the top center of the faceplate.

13- Rotate the control board back over to its side of the chassis and fish out all the loose connectors. Plug in the one in the middle of the board now.

14 - Seat the control board back into the slot in the bottom and run in the two screws with fiber washers all back into place.

15- Wrap the blue wire around the large cap on the control board, if yours was done this way.

16- Plug in the three connectors on the left edge of the control board

17 - Reattach the ground wire to the bracket

18 - Plug in the two connectors into the top of the Plug board.

19- Now you can power up the unit and see how everything is working and if you are as lucky as I was, it works as it should and no belts came flying off or bound up! I tested every control and played tapes to check every function at this point. A lot of cables were pushed and pulled and connectors unconnected and reconnected. Lots of room for something be loose and now is a good time to find it and fix.

20 - Have a beer you have fixed it!

21- Now have a look at the before photos and see how all the mess of cables were tied up. With your pile of small cable ties, recreate this a close as possible. The main thing is the cover has to slide over this so it can’t be piled up too thick.

22 - Replace the top cover.

So this sounds like a three beer job, but in reality I did this over three afternoon sessions. Maybe 8 or 9 hours total. I’m not sure actually. It may be faster for you because of these instructions (I hope). I had my “Zen going” and took my time and had to figure out a lot for the first time. I have no regrets as this sounds so much better than I remember any of my contemporary tape decks. The Hitachi has some nice features, 3 heads, good control on the tape chemistry settings, and a nice peak setting for the VU meters. The solenoid controls feel high end compared to the mechanical lever style I have in my low end Aiwa I owned in 1977. Hope this helps some folks to give it a go and keep these going for another couple of decades.
 
I don't much Hitachi outside of some random boomboxes and mini systems but I love their good stuff. On a side note I have the same Sony R2R, I just need the telephone dial reels that matched up with it.
 
Hi @Bugmenot1 - glad it helped! I'm not sure what the spring does, but I believe it is part number 42 in the parts diagram above. Just not drawn to scale very well. I actually don't remember it from the replacement, probably because I didn't have to remove that pully.
