Hitachi D 980?

A friend dropped off a Hitachi D 980 Cassette Deck lastnight. its a pretty nice unit circa 1984

it doesn't engage and play. the mechanism seems to want but i'm not sure the take up spindle is working, as its direct drive i hope the motor isn't dead. it sat for years

any input on the unit itself or whether its repair worthy?

Looks pretty nice to me, I would repair it.

I have no experience with Hitachis though so no idea what parts availability will be like. But it is a direct drive so it shouldn't be too bad.

I would guess there is a belt from the DD capstan to the second capstan and the reels are either belt driven or idler tire.

I also got this impressive 70´s Cassette Deck, which has the same problem
(no reaction of the head etc. after pressing PLAY).

Did you solve this problem on your D-980?
If so, i would be very interested about the details...
