Hitachi hsp-2400

AltecDarpa

King of carrot flowers
I just bought these speakers from a buddy for 15$ (he was useing them as a table) and I was suprised how nice sounding they are, they are pretty beat up, the tweeter dust caps are dented, and the right woofer dust cap is half dented, but they sound pretty decent considering a paid 15$ for them, I guess what I was wondering was, is there any place that would sell replacement speakers for this model? or what would some decent 8" drivers and 3" tweeter/mids be? brand-wise i mean.

im running them on a nikko NR-1415.

Why would you want to replace the drivers if they work? New dust caps can be had for little to nothing if that is all that is needed or you could try and pop the old ones back out.

well the 8"s have what appears to be mildew on them, and i was thinking if i could buy new speakers for this model at a decent price i could have "like new" speakers for less then say, 100$

Post a picture of the drivers -- I have the drivers from a pair of Hitachi 8 inch two ways with boxes that were knocked to pieces. The woofers I have have foam surrounds and rather light cones and the tweeters are closed back cones. I refoamed one, and could do the other, but have no use for them so haven't. If they are the same, you are welcome to them for shipping and the cost of two Mat Electronics surrounds (maybe a buck each).

sorry for the crappy pics i had to use my phones camera, i cant find batteries for my real camera,

Nope, sorry -- my drivers are much older. Your speakers look like they are from the eighties on, whereas mine are more sixties or seventies. Back when the grill cloth was folded around the front baffle and the drivers mounted from the back.

ahhh, thanks anyway nat, that was a nice offer, does anyone know where i could find replacement speakers for these? thanks

Finding replacements that will give the same sound or even decent sound is a tricky business. There are very knowledgeable folks versed in speaker design who could help (quite a few here on AK), if they had the driver parameters or ability to measure the current drivers to find appropriate fits. It may even require some modification of the crossovers.

You could wait to see if any come up on Ebay or other local electronics sale sites.

But if all the drivers are working, and you're only objection is the mildew, is there not some product that could be applied to kill the mildew and then something to clean it up? Care would have to be taken to ensure none of the solutions damaged the cone material. I don't know of any offhand, but putting forth this idea to see if any suggestions can come forward.

Being into these for 15$, it might be wise to cut your loss now, depending on how it goes here for any more suggestions. If you are in an area with an "electronic healthy" thrift store community, you should be able to score some very nice speakers that may just need some refoaming and cleanup. Do some research here on AK and you'll soon get a feel for what the popular speaker brands and models are to look for. You may run into a real gem too.

Thanks for the advice Kencat, i think i may just keep them as they are, i've been listening to XM classics all day and these speakers sound pretty good, I really notice the warmer sound of older receivers now that i have some speakers to use with the Nikko,:D
