HITACHI HT-320 motor frozen

Hi,

Got my hand on an old HITACHI HT-320.

All looks great, except that the motor is frozen.

- When I plug it on, it does not turn and I hear no buzzing sound indicating it is trying to turn.
- If I try to rotate the motor pulley with my hand, impossible to move it, it is stuck solid.

If it was dried oil or grease, I think it would at least move a little when I try with my hands. I do not want to force it too much to avoid breaking it and did not open the underside ... as I am thinking about returning the table to the seller who told me it was A-OK!

I would like to fix this as the rest of the table is absolutely mint.

Anyone encountered this and found a solution to get it running again … other than changing the motor?

Thanks
Christian

Try with as much hand strength as you can to turn the motor. If it won't move, heat the area with a heat gun or hair dryer, then try again. Add some oil at the base of the pulley and let it sit then try again.

Some belt drives have this happen. I've never had one not come unstuck.

It doesn't sound good. Check with a meter if any voltage is present at the motor input. A motor stuck that bad would likely blow a fuse down stream - so check fuse F1 (0.5A) on the power supply first. Don't just replace it and power up b/c it would blow again. Check resistance across the motor winding (S.M. says it's the two orange leads in the US model). If it's open - this isn't frozen grease - it's an electric meltdown and the motor is toast.

Thanks,

I did unstuck and sucessfully fixed a motor before on a Pioneer, but this one really won't budge. Still not decided if I keep it or return it to seller.

I just got my hands on an old Toshiba SR-230, in bad shape but motor seems to run great. Maybe I will try to salvage the Toshiba motor and install it in the Hitachi

Anyone know if these motor are all the same ?

P.S. For "Kano Kroil" unfortunatly in Canada the prices are insane

Manage to unstuck the motor with LiquidWrench but not enough.

Finaly decided to look inside and and saw the motor can easily be taken out and taken apart (see pics). Did some soaking in alchool and relubed with 3in1 motor oil. Ha yes, fuse was ok.

It now turn and the speed is dead on.

HOWEVER, THERE IS A BUT :dunno: the motor ls noisy, tiny bit when no belt, but much more with belt on. Actually I can reproduce noise with no belt by pressing a liitle on the side of the motor spindle. Actually it seems to be a vibration of the motor spindle. The noise is not getting to the speaker, but I can clearly hear it when beside the turntable.

Belt seems correct size, fit snugly on platter and there is a ltlle slack when attached to the motor.

Maybe I will have to take it apart and re-assemble again to see if I missed something, or maybe belt is really not right size.

Any suggestions are wecome

Thanks
Christian

Give the motor a good wack or 3 with something hard from the side. The "bearings" sometimes need a little help centering themselves. It won't hurt and might help.

If after centering the bearings, the unit is still noisy... try a heavier weight oil. Like 10W-40, as lubricant.

SOLVED:
Went back to it few weeks later and tried it again before opening it to check the motor ... and there it was, working perfectly, no more noise!

My guess is that the fact that I gently moved the motor pulley, and left it sit there with the belt putting a light tension on the pulley, the bearings eventually went back in place. So it look like off center bearings where the issue.

Bee using it since with no more issue.
