Hitachi KS-2400H Phono Preamp?

I just picked up a Hitachi KS-2400H for real cheap since it appeared to have a phono input and I like to gift turntable setups to friends.

Anyway, I'm testing it out today and it appears that the phono input doesn't have a preamp built in. I've tried a turntable with a built in preamp switch to confirm this (Fluance RT80). Does anyone have experience with this happening or access to a manual for this unit? Never encountered a receiver with labeled phono input and no actual preamp inside.

Other oddity on this unit is that the speaker outputs are rca.

This unit reminds me of a Nivico (nee, JVC) system we had when I was growing up. Kind of the 60's version of the ubiquitous "rack" systems of the 80's that looked more serious than they were. There might have been a TT that was marketed with this receiver that may have been set up to not need a Phono preamp. Or, maybe there's something wrong with the phono stage?

I’ve run into units like that the odd time. Input jacks labeled PHONO but not equipped for a MAG cartridge - only crystal (XTL) aka ceramic.

All have had RCA jacks for speaker connections, a hallmark in my opinion for (extreme) entry level units from years gone by.

Normally I avoid such things but have kept a Realistic phono pre-amp on hand for testing purposes.
