Hitachi sr 904 is making an intermittent popping sound

Looking at buying a hitachi sr 904 in good cosmetic condition, but it's making a popping sound. The popping sound seems random, sounds great otherwise...any ideas on what it might be? How much to fix? What's it worth in this sort of condition?

Very often loose/intermittent connections will cause a poping sound. However without farther inspection or hearing it, could be anything. Look inside if you can and tap, bang, shake it while it's playing. Wiggle connections and tease speaker switches. Ask people familiar with this unit, perhaps there is a common failure mode. I have no idea what its worth and I personally assume the worst on a unit that is not working correctly because if the fix where easy the seller should have fixed it before selling. Good luck.
 
That symptom is what happens when an electrolytic capacitor has gone bad.
A recap may fix it
 
My SR804 intermittently makes a sound like a helicopter is hovering over the house in the Right Channel. I took it out of service and need to get it serviced. Hopefully it is not too severe of a problem. I don't use it much. But, I want it to work properly

If its more like a "crackling/rustling/popping" sound then you could also be looking at a small signal transistor failure in the amplifier as well. More detail is needed of the type of sound you are getting to get more detailed advice.
 
Hmmm, if the controls are dirty, they can cause an intermittent pop.

Not as common as scratchy noise when used but it can happen.
