Anyone here have any experience with Hitachi gear. I have a chance to pick up a HCA 6500 cheap, but I can't find much about it. Thanks John:scratch2:

I got a Hitachi receiver. Not bad really. Pretty solid. I hear they used to OEM Marantz products in its heydays.

I've had a couple of receivers and liked them a lot. Very well built and solid performers. The SR-1100 is among the prettiest receivers I've owned, maybe the prettiest. Of course, this doesn't address the preamp you found but Hitachi is capable of making really good gear.

The power amps in that series are quite nice MOSFET units. I own two of the 100w dual-mono amps (HMA7500 iirc) and love them. I've never tried the matching preamps although I have two of them but I'd assume they were just as good.

What sort of gear do you currently have? If you only have a receiver and no power amp, you would need a power amp as well.

I have a pair of heathkit W4am mono amps that I am using, the Yamaha c-4 I have, the phono section is only working on one channel, so I thought that I wold try the Hitachi. So, as no one has anything negative, I'll pick up the Hitachi this week and give it a try. Thanks to everyone for the replies. I'll let you know the outcome. John

I use a 7500 MK II and like it well enough mated to the HMA 7500 MKII .

Good clean sounding combo IMHO .

I have a Hitachi SR-2000 receiver. It sounds pretty good, but doesn't blow me away. It's got a very MOTL sound, in my opinion.

Bought a $150 Hitachi cassette deck in 1979, still works fine today and sounds pretty good too. Impressed me no end.

Hitachi made some very well-built separates back in the late '70s. The HCA-6500 preamp was meant to accompany their basic HMA-6500 MOSFET power amp, so it's basic too. But since Hitachi was introducing their MOSFET technology that year, I can't help but think a little extra went into the associated preamps.

Having said that, preamps have come a long way since 1979, so don't expect miracles. If it's cheap, you'll enjoy it. It's somewhat similar to the basic preamp in my HA-7700 integrated. As always, get out the cotton swabs and the contact cleaner, take photos or it didn't happen, etc, etc, and report back.

the Yamaha c-4 I have, the phono section is only working on one channel

Having been inside my C-4 a few times, I doubt the Hitachi is even close to the C-4 in build quality. Have you tried cleaning all the signal path switches & selectors? My C-4 had weird switch & volume control issues until I cleaned EVERY SINGLE CONTACT with deoxit. I believe there may be electrolytic cap issues with the C-4 but I'll leave that to avionic. Start a thread on the C-4 if you want to DIY the fix.

Again thanks to all for the input, I'll probably pick it up mid week or so, the guy is a little distance from me. But I should have it cleaned up, and hooked by the weekend. I'm not expecting to have my socks knocked off, but I'll report back. As for the c-4 I'll try deoxit again, Avionic also had a couple of suggestions, which I'll try , but my ability here is limited, to say the least, I'll see what happens. John

I have bothe the HMA & the HCA 7500. The amp is excellent and the preamp is just a tad under that. The preamp is a bit bright sounding, at least on my KEFs. Get it.

Well got the hitachi, nice looking amp, I've always liked silver face gear to black. Broke out the deoxit, went through everything, it did come really clean, doesn't look like it has much use on it. hooked it up, and it exceeded my expectations, a bit bright and not the equal of the c4, but it does everything well, and doesn't do anything poorly. A keeper, and IMHO, very under the radar. here are a couple of pics. John:music:

Nice score! I should dig up my Hitachis and put them to work again.

FWIW I'd replace the handful of electrolytics since they look easy to change.

I was thinking the same thing, but that's down the road, I want to listen for a while. What do you think about Elna Silmic Caps? John
