HK 330a, 430 Twin Powered

Hi Everyone,

hoping you can help. I’ve got an HK 330a and a 430 Twin Powered receiver and both have a channel that went silent. Before that they sounded beautifully.

I’ve never opened up a receiver and switched out caps before, and I’m thinking it would be better to let a pro do it. (I’ve recapped speakers, however)

I’m located on Long Island. Anyone know anyone out here that can do the job for me?

Before you go to that extreme, try exercising the switches multiple times, especially the tape monitors. Could be as simple as that. If you have access to some contact cleaner, whether deOxit or other brand, get some, take the top and bottom off for access, and try to get some spray into them. Certain things like balance and volume pots need a different type of spray that also has lubricating properties. Faderlube comes to mind here. If you have a “Guitar Center” store around, you should be able to find products that will work.

Thanks. I’ve got deoxit but I haven’t given them a spray in some time. I’ll work all of the switches and buttons thoroughly. Hope that’ll do the trick but I’m a bit skeptical. Fingers crossed.

Worked on a fix and repair 330C I got a hold of. With headphones at full volume could barely hear something in the background. Keep in mind the cleaner needs to get inside the pots and switches where the wipers/contacts are and work them a number of times. The 330C same vintage as the 430, the next model down in the line. Easy first step.

Another known issue with the HK x30 series is the connections between the amp boards and the main board. They are push in / pin type connectors that tend to get dirty and the solder connections can fail due to stress. Try removing / reseating the amp boards and inspect the solder joints while you have them out.

I worked on the receivers last last and worked the switches and buttons with deoxit. I tried switching RCA inputs and switching speaker inputs from A to B. On one unit, one channel is completely out, and on the other unit one channel had muffled distortion but both channels do play. That same unit’s tuner plays cleanly through both channels. Anyone have any thoughts about a next step? I’d try fixing them on my own with proper guidance unless it’s considered a waste of time. Thanks again!

Plug a source into the tape (monitor) input , then select tape monitor switch on the front and see how it plays. The tape input bypasses the selector switch on both units.

On the 330a you can plug in a source with volume control (preamp, phone, portable cd, etc) into the main amp rca inputs at the back after you remove the jumpers. This way you can pinpoint if the problem is in the main amp section or somewhere before.
