HK 720 arrived today, arm bent.

Hi Analog Fans,

my auction arrived today, HK 720 TT, I unpacked the deck and noticed the arm was bent downward at the rest point. This was not do to packing. It was packed this way. Record drags across the surface of the lp at the end of play. Won't lift high enough to clear surface because of bend.

Have not had a bad sale in a while , I was due.

It works nice manually.

How was the tonearm protected from impact during shipping? Was the dust cover on? Was it shipped in the original manufacturer's carton?

That aside, if this were in for repair, I would attempt to bend it back. NOTE: in the rebending process, the key factor is to avoid putting stresses on the tonearm bearings. This implies two-point clamping BEHIND the point of bend and in front of the gimbal. If you're really good, the two-point clamping can be the extremes of your hand.

Well it's not good as it is :( Anyway to remove the tone arm and base? I'd guess it could be persuaded back into alignment with a light press and some routed wooden support blocks? Is the tube aluminum, or some composite material?
 
Thanks, I contacted the seller and he has agreed to take it back for a refund.

I paid for a working set up TT, not the case. I sent him pictures.

It was packed well except for the tone arm was tied off at the rest, no support under the front of the arm?

I will see how this plays out.

Uh I must be missing something here, if it wasn't bent do to bad packing then how did it get bent in the first place? Or did seller not inform you prior to bidding?

The seller sends his stuff to a tech to check it out before shipping. It was unpacked and repacked, I guess someone leaned on the arm a bit and did not take notice to this and packed it up. Or they know nothing about Turntables at all, thought that was the way it is supposed to be?

I really don't know, as long as I get my money back I can get another one.

UPDATE: TT is shipped back, UPS picked up on the 6th. Now to wait for my refund?

Yikes not good, at least you can get a refund. Needless to say a bent arm is not something I would even bother trying to fix. I could have happened in shipping, I've seen strange things happen even to the best packages. Those courrier guys are very creative.
 
Pioneer PL-518 swap.

Good Morning,

OK, I sent back the HK 720 which when I look at the original sales photos the arm was bent then too. So, they most likely thought that was the way it is supposed to be.

I went back online and saw they were selling a Pioneer PL-518 in good shape for what I had paid for the HK, so I asked for this instead of refund.

Since my Technics went on the fritz again, loss a channel again, this will be a nice replacement.UPDATE: Was just a poor connection at the phono 1 input, Technics SL-1500 is back online!

They are going to send this in replacement.

Again waiting game.

I have a 518 and it's been great. The feet may have rot issues but there have been several threads on this subject. The 518 is a very popular table around here and you should have loads of help if you run ito any trouble. I've had zero problems with mine. Good luck.

Since it is highly unlikely that these folks know how to REALLY ship a turntable, I suggest you get as pushy as I would get and INSIST that they ship the "replacement" machine properly.

There's nothing in audio that's harder to ship than a turntable. Here are some common illusions people have:

(1) If you ship it in the manufacturer's carton, it will arrive safely.

TRUTH: If you ship anythingin the original manufacturer's carton, and it is packed in hard styrofoam, the chances of damage during transport are huge.

(2) You can ship it with platter on.

TRUTH: about 25% of turntables allow you to do this safely. With the other 75% of machines, the platter comes off during transport and destroys the set.

(3) You can ship it with the dust cover on.

TRUTH: about 25% of turntables allow you to do this safely, even with the cover securely taped on. With the other 75% of machines, the dust cover isn't strong enough to get from point A to point B without cracking.

(4) The UPS store can pack it properly.

TRUTH: In a word: no.

I told them how to ship it, bUT some people just don't listen. I am about done with the online auctions. I am going to concentrate on the gear I have now and keep a few pieces and sell the rest or give it away.
