HK 730 / No Tuner

I recently purchased a Harmon Kardon 730 receiver.
It arrived damaged and the seller told me that there's "Nothing he can do about it".
I want to try to fix the tuner myself and am hoping that someone can provide helpful information.

Here's the problem:

All inputs work fine, except the tuner- no sound.
When I tune through stations, the signal meter does not move at all.

What needs to be done to get the tuner working? What can I look for?

I'm a bit bummed that this seller won't even work with me. I've bought several things from him, and he was a great source, and relatively local.
We actually stood in his garage and talked about people screwing each other and how much it sucks.
I'm still waiting to hear from him. Hopefully he calls.

As the issue happened after shipping, the unit could have been mis handled or dropped. First thing to look for is possible damage to the regulated power supply board like a crack or broken foil connection, or possible the fuse for that board popped out. The other place to look is to see if there are any cracks on the FM board by the tuning capacitor. You can also check to see if the FM board is getting the required DC volts (usually 12v to 14v)

Thank you for this information. I'll pop it open tonight and check these things.

I believe those receivers are pretty solid, with heavy metal chassis, Dual transformers, and metal cover all contributing to making the receiver pretty heavy. All depending on the internal packing used, a unit like that can sustain damage if the box is dropped in a way that one of the edges or corners impact a hard surface. The points where the board are secured to the chassis are the places where breaks/cracks can start. And the size/weight of the capacitors mounted on the [power supply board can cause a break. You may want to also check that board in the back that is connected to the antenna board. This can also crack and keep signal level very low or at 0

Opened up the receiver last night and inspected for internal damage. I didn't find any cracks on any boards, and am not sure how to get to the tuner boards. I saw the tuning assembly, but don't know what to do with it.
I'm just going to take this one on the chin I guess.
I purchased another HK 730 from eBay last night in excellent working condition- I guess I'll just keep this damaged unit for parts.
The seller still has yet to contact me except to say that there's "Nothing he can do".
I will say this- he has lost a good customer over $275. I'll never buy from him again.

Mark- if you're reading this- I'm very disappointed with how you handled this.
 
If you bought it through eBay it's pretty easy to get your money back since they favor buyers over sellers these days. If you bought it using PayPal goods and services there is a course of action you can take as well. It's a shame the seller won't help you out, don't understand that position at all.
 
Have the same problem. Repair guy said I need an I.F. board and a pre amp board. Who knows, trying to find them isn't easy
 
Saying it needs an if board and preamp board is not what you should be hearing from a tech. It seems he just doesn't feel confident he can troubleshoot and repair it. You need to find a competent component level tech. Best bet is he will be an older guy, and many of these skills are bygone capabilities.
