HK AVR 55 vs. Sony STR-DE698

Hey people,

I currently have the Sony STR-DE698 7.1 Receiver which I've been happy with.

I have an opportunity to attain the Harman Kardon AVR 55 for a great price.

I can't come to a conclusion and would appreciate some advice from the pros.

I mainly use it for movies as my audio listening is allocated to other 'non-surround' style receivers. However I've always heard HK's are where I should take the next step to. I know it's a bit outdated, but is it going to blow my Sony out of the water?

In addition the AVR 55 doesn't have DTS where the Sony does, which I'd like to hear input on as well.

I'm a little biased (just look at my avatar!), but IMHO HK make some great sounding gear. I've owned some +$1000 Yamaha and Pioneer THX receivers and neither could come close to the warmth the HK puts out, it's almost tube like. Even my non-audiophile gf could hear the difference. Over the summer I set-up and outdoor theater in the backyard and used my AVR154 (pretty much bottom of the line, 30x5wpc.) My neighbor was amazed how it filled HIS yard with sound and later bought it, his Sony ES was on Craigslist the next day.
 
I've heard similar experiences from many others which makes me want to do it. Should I hold out though, and possibly get a higher/newer model or give this one a try? I've got the guy down to $50.

The only reason I hesitate is the lack of DTS/THX, which I'm not positive is even worth fighting for.
 
Personally, I try not to take a step backwards when it comes to essential functions in a HT system. I consider DTS an essential function.

The HK may be a better-sounding unit, I don't know. I'm often skeptical when someone mentions a big sound difference in any gear (besides speakers) but especially in HT because there are so many settings that could be screwed up. IMO, if you're really wanting something different and more modern then save up for what you really want.

It's OLD, and really no longer has any useful video switching. Might work as just a 2ch. audio receiver for $50 or less. I can see me wanting this for my kids room to power her pc based system.
Personally I would recommend buying something refurbed direct from HK ebay, like a AVR254, HDMI switching, BEAUTIFUL OSD, 2 yr. warranty, etc. A 146 or 154 is another good option, I let a few go for around $125 on CL
 
From an owner of a AVR 146. And no it doesnt have master audio capabilitys. But i find that i have to keep the volume down for when loud action scenes come on. It gets loud even with the volume at around -30 decibals on the knob.

Some day ill get the master audio capable receiver and it very well may be by HK. Im very satisfied with mine. Bottom of the hill unit.
