hk citation 22 preamp suggestions

[superpig]

I am in need of a preamp for a citation 22 I bought on CL.
I'm new to all of this and I'm not sure what would be good with this unit. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Right now it is just plugged into the variable outs on my tv. I use it for music as well.

Obviously, a Citation 21 or Citation 25.

I have a Citation 21 and that I've used with a Citation Nineteen amp and wasn't crazy about the sound. A bit too thin, and "solid state" like for my tastes. Picked up a Yamaha C-4 pre and it was all together different. Big, full sound. Tone bypass and 3 excellent phono pre's to boot. Now i'm using it with my HK 730 receiver and the sound is great there too. A terrific preamp.

I thought about the 21 but I havent been able to find one. Si I am looking for other options. Do you guys know of any new units that are decent?

What's your budget? What source devices will you be using? Do you need a phono input? Do you want/need tone controls? Answering these questions will enable others to give you better advice.
