HK PM650 vs. NAD 7240PE?

I have a HK PM650 integrated that sounds pretty decent to me. But, it lacks pre out / main in that would be handy for some of my dabblings.

May have a line on NAD 7240PE, and they have pre out / main in. I've read NAD PE stuff of that era is sorta a love it when it works or hate it (repair wise).

I typically avoid asking (or much commenting) on "sound" of different components but in this case I am asking.

Don't need the NAD to sound much better just prefer not a meaningful step backward (yeah, exactly, all that subjectivity stuff).

Tuner feature of the NAD is largely unimportant to me. Mostly after the pre out / main in and the price seems OK, albeit wouldn't be a steal.

Work from the presumption both units are nominally functional.

Anyone have experience with both and care to comment on sound between these two?

I have good working NAD 7100PE and 7400PE Monitor Series receivers and a NAD 3240PE integrated amp. To me, they all sound good but then I am partial to the NAD sound. The 3240PE is your 7240PE without the receiver. I give the Monitor Series components an edge over the 3240PE but not by a wide margin. The NAD PE components' power reserve allows for a very dynamic sound. Especially in the lower range. IMO, all three NAD components are better than a good working Denon PMA 750 integrated amp I own.

I have a NAD 7240pe and a HK650vxi so a bit different than your 650. Both units were nonworking when I got them. So the HK wins for the fact that it is a lot less of a problem to repair. I also like it for the way the tone controls are setup and the fact that it can drive low impedance loads. Too bad they didn't include pre-outs, the older HK stuff had them. I mainly listen to classic rock stuff and both units were played in the shop with the same pair of bookshelf speakers. To me the HK seemed to have more control in the bottom end.
