Holy Grail Turntables

Since picking up and restoring an Elac 10 I have really become interested in various turntables. I also have a Rega Planar 3 with mayware 4 arm and denon dl160 cart.

So my question to you is what are the “holy grail turntables”. I know it depends on type. Idler, belt drive, direct drive. Also I am not talking of the turntable where a person or company invested 1million dollars just to see if they could make the perfect table that only 3 people in the whole world can afford.

So go ahead and list your thoughts.

As always, the answer is "It's subjective." I once started a thread on turntable complexity levels, and soon started to regret it a bit. Everyone has an opinion on what they think a turntable should be, and there are hundreds, if not thousands, of different turntables which fit those needs in various ways. I myself have come to enjoy various different types of turntables for what each one can and can't do.

Agreed my question is very subjective. It’s more of a learning experience to hear what others like. I just like listening to music played on good systems.

Edit: I missed this part: "Also I am not talking of the turntable where a person or company invested 1million dollars just to see if they could make the perfect table that only 3 people in the whole world can afford."

The TX-1000 would fall into that category.

The first direct drives from the early 1970s as in Nates project Sony TTS-4000 along with the Sony TTS-2250/2251, also the Technics SP-10Mk1 and SL-1100/120 etc. Brought back to spec these tables should be good for a 100 year life span.

Not sure I have a Holy Grail turntable anymore as I am happy with what I have. I do probably have a Holy Grail tonearm and that would be the 12" U 12 Tri Planar. It would be a great addition to the GT 2000.

For me it would mainly be the golden-era direct drive usual suspect legends i.e. Yamaha GT-2000, Kenwood L-07D, Sony PS-X9, Pioneer Exclusive P3 etc. I'd also say the forthcoming Technics SP-10R/SL-1000R. None of which I anticipate buying in the immediate-future :( although it is Euromillions Lotto night here and if my luck is in.... :D

My holy grail would be the best turntable I can afford. Something like Technics SP-10 mk2 plus a nice tonearm, or maybe two (one for high compliance cartridges and one for medium to low compliance cartridges).

Why would you prefer SP10 mk1 over mk2?
