Holy Guacamole - an SX-5580 for (cough) $20!

Nice work you're doing on that 5580. She is definitely worth the effort you are putting into her. I also have the 5580 that's in pretty good cosmetic condition but I only paid *cough* $4.99 at a local GW about 4 years ago. Here is a pic I took of mine a while back.

Progressing nicely-
MTF - thanks for the info on the transistors. I have those on hand and used them on my SX-1250/950 and 850. I think I'll leave these stock.

Finished recapping the tuner board today. I replaced all electrolytics under 1 uf with poly film parts. The others are Nichicon FG and a Muse.
The tuner PCB is tricky as it only comes out so far. I taped the dial string down in position and removed the large pulley on the tuner (wrapping it with tape). Reassembly was non-traumatic.
Tomorrow is reassembly, adjust the amp and give it a listen. I might replace some indicator bulbs with various color LEDs.

All done!

All done!
I adjusted the amp section to spec, changed the FM de-emphasis to the US value of 75us and changed the input voltage from 110 to the much safer 120VAC.
105+ new caps in there, I replaced all the electrolytics and tantalums except for the 2 big power supply caps. All the semiconductors are stock.
The faceplate has some dings on it so I decided not to go too crazy over it and just touched up the flaws with a black sharpie. It's unlikely I'll ever pick up a parts unit with a clean face so it'll have to do. The black on the case isn't perfect either.
But electrically this thing is wonderful - I'll stick with the 120 watts x 2 of function over form any day!

You've done a bang up job on this receiver, Jim. They are truly beautiful looking receiver's. I had the pleasure of owning one of these and was quite impressed with its performance and looks. One of the few pieces that I've owned that got great reviews from the wife. As for the cases cosmetics you can spend as little as 20 bucks on some Black Ash vinyl laminate. I was hesitant when I redone the case on mine, but was really satisfied w/the results.

Looks very nice. I presume that with the black ash laminate you have to sand the wood perfectly smooth otherwise the flaws will show through?
I see that Parts Express sells this stuff. Maybe I'll order some in July when the deoxit goes on sale.
Also I was thinking of seeing how a wood case from a 1050 would look.

Your correct about the sanding of the case before applying the vinyl. I spent as much time in prepping the case as I did in applying the vinyl. I personally like the 5580 wrapped in black, but I know everyone's tastes are different. Here is a couple pics of them together. The 1050 just looks natural in it's normal skin, but I like the black background for snapping out the silver in the 5580.

Nice toys!
I was thinking of the wood case for the SX-5580 - I don't like it as much but it is interesting. (Does this case make me look fat??)

Black versus silver (850/5580/950). I love all my children, kinda gives you a hankerin' for those Hydrox cookies...
