Home with the flu.....a pictorial

jeffn

Mid-Fi Crisis
Yesterday I started feeling sick. There's been a bad flu around this year, so bad that an otherwise healthy 33yo woman died recently from it. I think 8 have died in total. Anyhow, I came home today around lunch time but far from feeling good about having a "day off" I felt utter crap. As the day wore on I went through a period of feeling a little better so I decided to open up a speaker I'd suspected of having problems.
I have a pair of Sonab OD-11 (smaller of pictured), and some Sonab OA-14's (larger pictured).

The OA-14's are meant to have a deeper bass response than the 11's, but mine are nowhere near as good as the OD-11's. It's really obvious too so I thought I'd try to find out why.

So tonight I swapped the 6.5" peerless woofer from the 11's to the 14's. (In the kitchen with the help of a Whippet) to see if the problem followed the woofer (no, not the Whippet)

Here below is the OD-11's with the woofer removed. (no, I don't mean the whippet)

Here's the top loosened off the OA-14's (below)

Below, the Peerless woofer. A great little speaker.

After swapping the drivers. The larger OD-14's still sounded bad. Now to open the top and look for the crossover......

The crossover...... suspended under the top plate by 4 screw though rubber grommeted holes. It was a lovely sight.....

i saw nothing obviously amiss........ but I think a recap is in order and I'll re-assess then.

These Sonabs are really well made by the way. Drivers sit on soft rubber rings, there are 3 levels or stiff cross bracing inside the 14's, crossovers look well made, general materials and manufacture are first class.......... but God I feel sick......:sigh:

Dunno about you, but when my head is all stuffed up, my critical listening skills go down the drain. Everything sounds like tinny garbage. If I can't measure it objectively, it's not worth doing.

And here I thought I was going to see pictures of the flu. Like Markw says, sick messes with your hearing. By the way, nice looking speakers.

For awhile there, I thought I might catch the flu from you by looking at your pics, but that wouldn't make any sense.:scratch2: Nice pics and I like your whippet.

The title of this thread was like a bad train wreck... I just had to look! :D

Nice Woofer

I must agree with kcollins4.In the words of Phil Hartmann as Frankenstein's monster- whippet GOOD !

Or was that Devo?

Really,though,a very cool canine. willhowl

P.S Hope you feel better soon- maybe a chuckle will help?

I remember listening to the Sonabs when they first hit the American market, back in the mid-70's. I was impressed with their unconventional looks. They were hooked up to Tandberg electronics for demo. Pretty smooth sound. I cannot remember ever seeing the internals, so thanks for the pic's. Have some chicken soup and get better.
