Homemade speakers are a Home-Run!!!

Well, I'm seeing first-order x-overs (caps) in the pic, so that's covered (safety-wise) if the right values were used,
but the total system impedance should be a definate concern.

they look bypassed to me, look at the wires.

Homemade Speakers...

In response to all your kind replys, I would have given the exact same advise to anyone asking me about OHMs requirements and danger of blowing out speakers as well as amps... I did a lot of study before I even went into my workshop...I used the lil Kenwood tweeters and one mid primarly because they were orig wired with only resistors in-line and no crossover. The CS mids are very good as wired... just couldn't sound any better... Actually you are correct, my ohm meter reads zero across the main posts of the cabinet and I'm sure that the amp(s) I've tried on them also read zero as you've stated. I started with a lil 535 watt Sony MHC-EC99i bookshelf amp and played it for several days at all volumn levels and no problems... by the way, that lil amp is purely outstanding with those speakers!!! I realize any self-respecting audiophile would snub that lil amp but it is truly amazing with those speakers!! A few days ago I hooked up an Onkyo A-809 and the only diff was a slight better sound full range.. just simply awesome, believe me... This Sat I'm picking up a Denon POA-2800 & 1500 pre to put on it... I expect that to be even a lil better than the Onkyo... I've fully expected that I may blow out a speaker but as you can see in the incld pics, I have a hellva supply of em and if I lose an amp I'll just swear a lil and rewire em to about 4 ohms but in the meantime I mean to share with you just how magnificant these sound and perhaps it will inspire someone else...

I think you've built yourself an electron bomb

You really should think about some sort of filtering for the small mid and HF drivers

They're cooking while we type

I'm not knocking how these sound, look or what kind of gear you are using.. I'm just trying to help you keep from damaging any of it, is all..

I think your entertainment center is stunning and inspired.

It's a mystery to me why you're not seeing smoke from your amp driving this load. But you are obviously aware of the risk, it's your gear, and you are enjoying it a great deal. That, to me, kinda defines this hobby.

I'll be curious to learn how it works out with the Denon gear :scratch2:

Oh, and welcome to AK!

The Denon amp will have no problems. The 2800 is notorious for its low impedence grunt and massive headroom (somthing like 800 watts at 2 Ohm). I owned one for years and though it is kinda of vanilla sounding you will like it. The pre is not bad as well if my memory serves. :thmbsp:

I applaud your inspiration

Well I congratulate you sir. You have unwittingly turned your new entertainment center into the center of my entertainment for the day.

I installed the same system in my car.

I think the OP may have created the most-power-hungry speakers in history. Party-speakers for the last party ever.

I guess my 39x2 is out of the question.

It should be interesting to see how this turns out. By the way, are those indeed open-baffle, or did he just take the back off to get a picture of the drivers?

Update... May 01

Been tweakin n testin since last post and its just gettin better!! Firstly, I rewired both cabinets using both series and paralell and ended up with what I believe is approx six ohms total... the meter reads 4.6 across terminals on both cabinets. I was afraid that it wouldn't sound as good but it is even better! I got my Denon PRA-1500/POA-2800 in and hooked up with a notch improvement but still not what I was looking for. So I bought an Onkyo M-504 and using the Denon pre with it the diff is obvious and close to my hopes. The 504 is definately warmer sounding. I was originally striving for a live performance sound but have now progressed beyond that to a recording studio master-quality sound. These speakers are totally amazing!!! There were a couple of questions about the design that I'll try to answer... the cabinets are sealed (there is 26 screws holding the backs on), there is a 4" piece of fiberglass insulation covered with a nylon netting on the back to prevent sound waves from bouncing around too much, there is a total NET inside volume/space of 8470 cu in. I've bought an Onkyo pre amp which I'm looking forward to hooking up but other than that, I've arrived where I want to be and will stay with it till I die. I only wish that all you who loved music as I do could have such super speakers.

I didn't read all the posts in between, but that is some nice project. It is truly fun to see not only the "off the beat'n path" approach, but the craftsmanship to go with it. Something certainly to be happy with. I used to build speakers when I was a teen. Many years later I'm slowly getting back into it. Much has changed since, but them old drivers are so sweet.
