Wiggy,

How the heck does one enforce "banned from causing harassment, alarm or distress anywhere in England and Wales for two years" ? Banned? Tie her up :) ? Send her to Scotland :) :) ??

Thor better look out :D !! You might be "waiting for the worms to come" !!

Pete

IIRC, in Britain you're required to buy a license to own & operate a TV or radio-maybe that's how they'll stop her. I'm surprised they haven't tried that foolishness here. I'd go broke just buying the frealin licenses for all my gear. Then some wise-guy would want a 5-day waiting period on amplifiers or Tvs... -Sandy G.

It does serve to illustrate an interesting conundrum. On the one hand, not many of us want the 'thought police' to be concerning themselves with how we live. On the other hand, there are more of us living closer together than ever before - and we rub shoulders. We want to be left alone, but sometimes we're not willing to leave others alone. What's the cure?

In this case, some woman apparently refused to turn down her stereo. We might normally say that it's rediculous to try to enforce such an order on someone - but what are her neighbors to do? Don't they have rights?

However, on the other hand - I had a coworker once who's elderly mother was very deaf. She habitually turned the TV up very loud. She was also so elderly that she was not very cooperative when asked to turn it down - nor would she wear her hearing aids, which she claimed hurt her. So my coworker was kicked out of her apartment building and had a very hard time finding another apartment. Was that fair?

It's a funny old world. I suspect we'll see more of this in future. People seem to be tending to be less tolerant, and also less caring of how their behavior impacts others.

Wiggy,

Great comment!

Yeah they can take the kids (and some adults!) car stereos here in Parma if you can hear them 50 ft. away, no more db requirements, basically the cops can do what they want. They can also take your home stereo after a certain number of complaints (don't remember how many).

In NYC and SF they now have soundproofing requirements for outside walls for new construction, I don't know the details, but it's sure helping business!! (My co. makes/sells sound barrier to distributors.)

What I was referring to punishment-wise was the punishment, she was obviously a problem, but the only way I can think of to "ban" someone from alarm, harrassment, etc is to lock them up! Reminds me of a town I heard passed a law banning squirrels from copulating in public :) .

I agree, it's a tough spot. It seems we're getting less and less considerate. I jam on friday evenings, try to keep a lid on it the rest of the week, think that's fair. Who knows? I don't think it'll be thought police, though, they don't worry about cop killer lyrics, just gay comments :D !

Sandy,

Yeah I bet they yank her permits, the tax systems overseas are WAY different, and keep creeping here. Heck, we almost got the VAT 5-6 years ago!! Politicos LOVE hidden/extra taxes.

We'd be sneaking around listening our stereos. For some reason this thought cracks me up. Officer, I swear, I was listening to my main system! Here's the permit! No!, I never even turned that one on! Plugged in? ummm, Honey, did YOU plug it in? Dang kids must have done it. :lmao:

Thor, better hope it's not charged by the watt!!

I'm glad my house is a comfortable distance from my neighbors, not like these new homes built on top of one another, probably a good 50ft of space between us. Although a nice privacy fence would further help matters. Maybe even a concrete wall...LOL.

Couple of years back, loud music and 3 visits the same week from the cops, cost me $ 175.00.
Had to explain for the judge it was 4th july celebration.
But still gave me a fine.

Strangest thing Thor, when the beer goes down the volume goes up, right ?:D

I think Einstein did did an equation on it to prove the theory ;)

You're lucky, last time the cops came to my house they said if they come back someone's going to jail  I'd hate for my GF to have to go to jail :p: ;)

So you gonna say " She did it " !:p:
Be careful, when she comes out the day after, that will not be pretty when she chase you around with the skillet.:D

My conclusion with volume and beer:

1-3 beers = normal volume
6-12 beers = half way on the dial.
12-24 = Red led on the meters:rockon: :beerchug:

Cops arrive and you tell them to:butt1: shortly after the wife is:sadwave:

Cheers !:thmbsp:

I think the cops here give you a ticket if they hear loud RAP music playing in your car.I'm a 42 year old white male, and I love driving around town with DMX cranked up.You get that double take from all the neighbors, and then they see its a middle aged white guy,and all of a sudden, its ok,like, false alarm.:D
