Horn choices for Aristocrats???

Captain Scary

On Island Time
I am going to make new front baffles
for my Aristocrat cabs
and have three choices for tweeter horns.

I have EV T-35s , Jensen RP-103s,
or University 4401s.
I am familiar with the first two
but haven't tried the 4401s before.

Anybody have any opinions/experience with them?

Specs claim they reach higher than
the other pairs (2K-15K).

I may try some Heils I have from some PS8s?
These I have currently hooked up with some
Norelco 12" fullrangers
in big Heathkit cabs and they add
great sparkle .

Cheers,
Barry

No,the current baffles are
only cut for a single 12" driver.
Thought I would play around with them
and see what might sound sweet.
Although they sound
damn nice with just 12" fullrangers in them.

Might want to look in the Econowave thread. Someone there has build a pair out of your cabs and, if I remember right, was impressed. Cheers.

Yeah,I have several cabs inline
for econowaves.
I just want to play with some of
the drivers I have hanging about.

The T-35s are teamed up with some
JBL D-208s at the moment.
They do sound good.

I am curious to hear the University 4401s.
I never hear any mention of them
so I guess it is possible they
aren't anything special.

Only one way to find out.
I like the RP-103s in my SS-1s too.

I guess I'll make the horn cut out big
enough to take the largest ones
then adapt it down for the smaller ones.

Hey hey Capt!

On a side note, Steely Dan Guy finally measured the Mono EV cab for me.
It is 29" high. I guess that makes it a Aristocrat! I belive it to be a three way. It'll be fun to see what's inside! I hope to pick it up Christmas.

SixCats!

Hey Capt!

OK, I just got back from RI and I have the Aristocrat CORNER HORN!
It appears to be in very NICE physical condition. I will clean & set it up tomorrow as I am too tired to do it tonight after driving 800 miles this since Christmas eve. Oooh man, I can't find a way to get inside this Speaker! That is to say, no EASY way. I will have to take a better look but, I believe it is NAILED. Arrrrrr, not nails again lol. I believe one driver is a 12" Woofer and the other a Horn judging from looking at the front of the Speaker. Anyway, should be a fun project!

Regards,
SixCats!

yup . . . just cut for the largest tweeter, and make little adapter plate to fit the others : )

is the University tweeter the same used in the 6201 coaxials ?

btw - found the Niles switchbox - patiently waiting for my trip to Maine for its trip home :D

i've got a pair of 4401's. i've not done much listening with them, but initial impressions are that they sound really horny (the monster punster strikes again). the metal horns are kinda thin, and they ring severely. i was going to use them with a pair of 12" university alnico magnet woofers i have, unfortunately i dropped a t-350 through one of them, so until i find a replacement...

the 4401 horn looks difficult to mount directly to a baffle without the baffle diffusing some of the sound. a plate is called for.

the 4401 does LOOK like the same one in the 6201's...

i thought the t-35's went higher than 15k

Hey markus

Yeah,I think the horn may be the same.
Has a nice little driver on it.

Specs say it goes higher than the EVs
and jensen 103s.
Literature I found says it was used in the K-horn
for awhile.
There is a picture of it mounted on the baffle in
the "speaker clamps ????" thread
I posted.
Shows the cool PC harddrive magnets
I used to mount the Norelcos.

And they do sound sweet.........

nice pics lguise,thats them.

I was checking out specs on hifilit I think
and they went higher than the EVs n Jensens
according to brochures.

I haven't A/B ed them with others yet
but like the Jensens in my S1 heathkits.

The T35 was used for the longest time in KHorns, and the variant is now the K77. Of the three horn tweets mentioned, the T35 was the one most often used, and the one that sounds best in the three Aristocrats I have heard. They are quite efficient, so expect to turn the highs down a little... :thmbsp:

Hey sheltie dave,
I think the literature said the 4401 was superceeded
by the T35 in the K-Horn.

I don't have any L-pad on the 4401s
but will install them
when I give the T35s a try.

Have had the 4401s hangin around a long
time and really wanted to see what they
had to offer.
The Aristocrats are great fun for experimenting
as it is so simple to cut n install new baffles
in them.
I'm sure the E-wave fever will find
it's way into them at some point.
