Horn questions

I am going to be making a set of DIY speakers soon, and I have some questions.

Whats the difference between using a compression driver versus just a normal speaker? Can I just put a speaker in the back of the horn? Is there any advantage to this versus just putting the speaker in a normal box?

Is there a good guide anywhere for DIY wood horns? I was really wanting to make my own horn.
