Hot Steam Tweeter Repair

I have a pair of Dahlquist DQM-9 Compact tweeters that have pushed in cones for over 15 years. I totally neglected them, and apologize to all. One was rather mangled with a dent that actually was more of a folding over, and very irregular. It was as bad as anything I could describe. No original photo because I did not know I may be on to something noteworthy (or stupid?).

Standard methods to pop this out failed, so I removed the diaphragm that is glued to the faceplate and popped it out with my finger. The fabric was still very irregular with numerous craters. So, before sending it to Regnar for repair, I decided to use steam to get out fabric wrinkles. Works on clothes, right?

I microwaved distilled water in a coffee cup and placed my Tweeter on the cup. I then started to gently iron out the wrinkles from the inside using a plastic pen. Later, I just filled the Tweeter with distilled water to try to let gravity push out the wrinkles. I did this numerous times.

I do not see any sediment or damage to the voice coil or Tweeter fabric. I have not tested the Tweeter because my speakers are completely disassembled pending my refurbishment.

Assuming you didn't damage the voice coil, I think you did a great job.

Thank you, but that is the big question. I used distilled water so no sediment would remain and none was seen. Also, I did not notice any evidence of adhesive melt. However, dropping the voice coil back into the magnet was not comfortable to do. I can see where that could have caused damage.

Generally if the faceplate is attached to the magnet with screws then it was designed to be reassembled, although I don't see any alignment pins which would have made the job a little easier.
