House shopping

wank

Moks by popular demand
So the wife, kids, and broker and I spend about 6 hours house shopping today. Aside from the lodging options, it was otherwise pretty darned interesting.
At the second occupied house we saw (with the occupants out for lunch) I was passing through the kitchen to the livingroom when my wife said "Uh oh, better leave." Made no sense to me, then I entered I saw the two lattice grilled speakers beside the TV.
Neato - closer inspection revealed a pair of CS-99a in lovely shape, connected to a POS home theater reciever.
The next house had a Mac1700 connected to nothing.
Two after that, and a Technics TT, Sansui reciever, and Genesis physics speakers sitting in the basement, and a really nice shape SX-650 in a closet.
It kept going like that until I started just avoiding eye contact with anything that looked like it had knobs or grille cloth.

hahahhahahaha.... funny what you see when your eyes have been opened to these sorts of things.. I was recently in a friends house and saw his dad's speakers sitting on the ground... in a few seconds I decided on quality, era, the shape they were in and whether or not to ask if I could have them lol...

so, you decided on the house with the mac? he he

I was house shopping a couple years ago and found a nice spanish style house with a basement. Basements are not too common in So. Cal, so that alone was kind of cool. Walking into the basement, I found walls and walls lined with CD's, boxes filled with shrink wraped CD's, and stacks and stacks of loose shrink wrapped CDs. Sitting up on a shelf were two Mac tube amps. Almost bought the house, but found out the basement needed to be retrofited due to earthquake damage and would have cost an additional 45 grand.
Also turned out the guy was a musician and the shrink wrapped CD's were him.

Wow. Totally different experience than what I had back in 1997-8. I must have looked at about 25-30 houses when I was house-shopping, and only one had any stereo gear at all: an '80's all-Toshiba silver plastic crap rack system with a cassette deck held closed with duct tape. Other than that one house, the only other music making devices in the homes I looked at were occasional clock radios on night stands or kitchen counters. Not even a Bose Wave radio or a boom box to be found. Weird.

It's funny what your job and hobbies will make you notice in new surroundings. I was a plumber by trade till my health gave way, and I've loved audio since I was old enough to tune a transistor radio. My wife gets tickled at me all the time for noticing brands of faucets, and what kind of audio gear a person has, even on TV.

When I was house shopping, there was almost no audio gear to be seen in any of the homes, except one. This house had a system in every room, but they were all these really expensive little systems that you knew they bought new. Little executive systems, Apple gadget based systems, etc. Made me chuckle to think that I had had probably the same ammount of money invested in my main system as this dude had in a bedroom system, and I knew mine would blow it away...

And no, we ended up in another house.

Speaking of which.. i was watching a show "Boy meets world" the other day... and I SWEAR on set in his dorm room he had authentic HPM-100s, my gf just shook her head at me. Oh, I also noticed the middle class kid was wearing a lacoste polo lol... funny what you notice when you get older...

A lady I worked with was house shopping and they hit a new house on the market. Walking around it was real feminine on the upper levels but when they went to the basement, it was a MAN CAVE. Gold and Platinum albums on the wall, acoustic treatments everywhere, mixers, DAT machines, etc. Come to find out it was a musicians house. She didn't put 2 and 2 together but her husband did. It was Kelly Keagy of Night Ranger house. They ended buying it.

Later on, they found some paperwork and had to call him. His son said he would call them back because he was out in the barn recording.

Whenever I saw her, I asked if she was "motoring" or "still rockin in America"
