How bizarre! Bose 2201s corner speakers

These are on ebay with 4 hours left.
Very strange set up with 22 drivers per speaker.
Prolly sound like ????

From seller "Here is a historic speaker system. Bose made only some 60 or so of these, and they sold for only one year. They were Bose's first foray into multi-dimensional sound, before the 901 direct/reflecting idea. This particular pair has been gone over by Bose in Framingham, MA and the amps and drivers brought up to spec. Bose advises that they now have even more replacement drivers in stock. As you can see from one pic, they have 22 drivers a side. These are late serial numbers, something like 58 and 59. The serial number shows in one pic. I am only the second owner of these, and they are part of my speaker collection. But, I'd like to move on, and try some older big Snells, and I am running out of rooms."

I read the papers on them when he proposed the idea but never saw a pair in life. Other than as a rarity, I'd not travel to far to look at them and could not image buying them.
 
They must be pretty large! Unless those are 2" speakers. What are they, 4", you think?

A chance to pick up someting historical before Bose took the wrong direction?

Wow, I remember seeing pictures and even reading some of the papers Amar wrote about his 'pulsating sphere' speakers back in the 70s. I've never heard them but always wanted to. Any pictures of the amps?

I've only seen 1 grainy picture of them and would go with the seller's description regarding rarity.

Leave it to Amar to come up with a 1/8 pulsating sphere.

The man definitely thought out of the 'speaker' box.
 
I think they look cool. I love the idea those guys had back in the day. Right or wrong they tried stuff, some worked and some didn't. Funny that all those idea's are getting traction again. I got into DIY a few years ago and the first thing I noticed was the amount of idea's you want to try out. Another pair of speakers with 2 drivers on the front is uhm.... boring.

Around 1957-58? There was an article in Popular Electronics on how to build a speaker array they called "Sweet Sixteen" The design called for sixteen five inch? automobile speakers that sold for a dollar each. These would be mounted on a plywood sheet to the
speakers holes you had cut out and they provided information on how to wire them. I always imagined them hanging on a wall like a framed picture. So fifteen years later when I read a mention of Bose 2201 speaker, I pictured them like the Sweet Sixteens. Never imagined them to look as shown in the photos that Captain Scary provided.

I find early Bose offerings, if not always to my liking or tastes, to be at least innovative and progressive.

Just sold my 301s to a guy who collects Bose 301/501/601s as well as AR 9/90/9LSIs...
 
+10 for creativity on those, at least. I'd be extremely interested in hearing them play live.
