The almost unknown "sleeper" in the AR line-up is the AR-12. Most people say the 3a was the "best ever" AR model, but among the very few people who have owned both (the 12 is pretty rare), some prefer the 12. Possibly the best speaker that AR ever made. If you find one, though, RECAP it!

All polypropylene construction for the cones. 2 x 12", 1 x 8", 2 x 6.5", and a aluminum dome tweeter. But the pretty much same as the AR-9s.
I'm pretty sure the pair I was using had shorts in the chokes cause it sounded like arse and I didn't have any amps that would drive them worth a...

I always thought the 10pi was the ultimate expressionof the 3a. I have 11's now, once had and sold 9ls with crossovers upgraded to lsi spec. The 9LSi were tremendous speakers IMHO. They had the most powerful, deepest bass of any speaker I've ever owned, and the mids and treble were nice too. The 11's I have now are also nice, however their midrange sounds a little reticent and distant probably because they need a recap. They go almost as low as the 9LSi but can't move the volume of air that the 9's can. I've heard LST 2's and 10pi's extensively and wasn't overly impressed with the LST 2's. The 10pi and 11 are essentially the same speaker with the 10pi having a much more complicated crossover to compensate for room/bass interaction.The almost unknown "sleeper" in the AR line-up is the AR-12. My choice would be the LST's by a wide margin over any other speaker on the list.

The only AR's I've had are the 58s's. I thought they were way too clinical and lifeless at the time. However, both my gear and listening preferences have changed over the years and I am interested in how I would percieve them now.
I suppose I should refoam them and get them back in the lineup, I haven't heard them in about 5 years.

I also had a pair of AR-16's that I bought new in the 70's. This advert is the only thing I can remember them by since I sold them in 81'.:tears:

The Teledyne AR-9 still can hold its own to some pretty big names and prices, I owned my pair for 5yrs and it was a shame they only fetched $900 when I sold them a couple years ago but the market sets the price. I see many that are not in as good of shape as mine but still very nice for around $600...a bargain if you dont try to power them with a reciever, they need power!

I'm sorry, but I don't see this comparison at all. The tweeter is no where near good enough to compare to any ES speaker. And the imaging is no where near what a properly setup ES has.

If that ES was getting driven by one of our severely overrated "monster" receivers from the 70's, and the AR-9 was getting driven by decent amplification (as it should be), there could well be similarities.
