How do I hook up a McIntosh 5100 amp to a Pioneer SX-850

I guess pre amp to tape in on the Mac if you need to use the Pioneer for some reason (tuner?).
I would probably be connecting the sources, (tt), directly to the McIntosh, I cant think of a good reason to make the signal go through any more than necessary to get to the speakers.

If your main reason for doing so is to use Pioneer for its tuner section, you should connect the tape record outputs of the receiver to inputs labeled "tuner" of the MA 5100.
Otherwise, I would make all connections to the MA 5100 in the normal manner, including speakers and all other inputs.

Ok, I tried hooking the phono 1 straight to the amp and I get nothing. When I turned on the amp I got static out of the right speaker and then nothing. I am thinking the amp is bad. I purchased it at a an estate auction over the weekend. I might add as far as cosmetics go, the thing looks mint.

You don't hook a phono output to the amp. Never. This is the reason we tell newbies not to do this, as they are better at blowing things up than getting things right.

Assuming you made connections at the Phono input & ground wire from the turntable properly, there is obviously something wrong. First thing I'd look at would be the input selector switch, indeed all switches are likely to need a good cleaning.
Do any of the other inputs work - ie from a CD player or from the tuner?
The MA 5100 is a very nice unit and if it's cosmetically mint, it'll be well worth sending out to Terry DeWick for a full servicing - including recapping and whatever else he recommends. He'll make it sound as good as new and you'll be good to go for a long time.

I would just use the ma5100. You could sell the sx850 or use it for a second system. It does not make sense to use them together.
I have come to the conclusion that there is something wrong with the amp. I have tried hooking it up direct to the amp's Phono 1 input and I get nothing. Unless there is something else I am not doing properly, it is going to have to be repaired. I am pretty sure I got the speakers hooked up correctly (- to common) and the mode selector to Phono 1.
Any ideas on what is wrong with the amp and needs repaired.

JMarley, I am afraid that you don't understand, or I don't understand what you are saying. The McIntosh MA5100 is an integrated amplifier, meaning it has a preamp section and an amp section. The preamp section has inputs for outside sources, a turntable, a tuner, a tape deck.
The phono jacks are for input only and are not to be used for feeding a signal out. The phono jacks are also ONLY for a turntable. The othe inputs are what are called "Line" inputs.If you had a tuner you would connect it here. If you connected the tuner to the phono input the signal would be too strong and possibly harm the amplifier.
Now you have a receiver, a pioneer SX850, and it has its own set of inputs and outputs plus it has a tuner. If you wanted to use the tuner that is in the SX850, you could take the tape out connectors on the Pioneer and hook then to the tape inputs on the Mac, but the SX850 receiver's other sections would be wasted. Tis a far far better thing to get a tuner and connect it to the tuner input on the Mac and use the SX850 in another room with a pair of its own speakers.
