How Do I Remove the Stylus From an OM5E?

mayidunk

A man of dubious taste...
I tried searching for it, but I couldn't find anything any more specific than, "...remove the stylus." I tried the obvious, but it wouldn't budge, and I didn't want to pull any harder. I'm thinking it may need to be twisted first, but I certainly don't want to attempt that unless I'm absolutely sure that's the case.

So, I turn to you good people. Can someone please tell me specifically how to remove the stylus from an Ortofon OM5E?

Also, is "Ortofon" pronounced "orto-phone" or "orto-fon (rhymes with "on")?"

Thanks!

Bob: It's indeed the obvious (i.e. it simply pulls off towards the front) - so you'd need to pull a bit harder...

Well, and for the pronounciation: Over here all three os in Ortofon are pronounced like the first o in pronounciation or corruption or like the first and second o in Toronto or like the o in Roger or Admiral von Schneider, with a slight emphasis on the third o (in form of it being held a bit longer...). But I guess you could just as well pronounce the "fon" the English/American way as "phone", as Ortofon probably won't mind anyway, as long as you buy their products... :D

Greetings from Munich!

I have always pronounced it Ortofon (rhymes with "on")

Are you trying to remove it to upgrade it or is the stylus broken??? just curious.

Hey mayidunk,

The Ortofon stylus should just pull out (like taking a cap off of a pen). No twisting.

I always assumed that it was "orto-phone."

Good luck!

Thanks, guys! I'm removing it to just take a look at the stylus, that's all. I'm pretty happy with the sound it gives, so I'm not looking to upgrade anything just yet.

I liked the OM5e. It was the only cart that my local Hi-Fi retailer stocked (they are into everything but they have, for whatever reason, a limited vinyl audience) Thus, I had two tables that needed carts and when I went to them, that's what they offered me. The price was OK = $55-60 or so and I liked the sound I got.

mayidunk- the improvement in every aspect of sound quality with the Audio Technica 440mla is noticeable in comparison to the OM5e. If you can muster up the $150 or whatever an AT440mla costs just do it. It just put the OM5e to shame, and I was comparing the two on the same 'tables.

Buuuuuuuuuuuut........if you wanted to get an Ortofon OM10,20,30, stylus etc and mount it to the OM cart you already have I think that'd be a good way to go. I'm just saying that I was a fan of the OM5e until I heard the AT440mla and "saw the light, lawdy, lawdy!!!"

Kind of an unfair comparison. Spend the same money on a stylus upgrade for the Ortofon, and you will have a very different beast. A much nicer cartridge in my opinion, than the AT. Then you have an awesome om20 or 30, depending on the deal you get.

Ortofon is a Danish company, we pronounce the name kinda like lini describes. It will sound a little weird for the English-speaking I think!

The OM5 is a nice beginner's stylus, but I prefer the 20 instead as it has a much more refined sound image.

Ortofon used to use a sticky goop on their needles for, I think, sound deadening/anti-resonance. Made it difficult to remove them. The advise used to be don't remove it unless you really have to as you may have to replace that sticky goop. Does this still apply?

I don't know about any goop, but I do know that I've decided not to remove it, as it just seems to need a bit too much "pull" to remove it. I think I'll wait until it's time to replace it before I precipitate a reason to have to replace it! :)

A little carefully applied "thumbnail torque" between the cartridge body and stylus seems to help ... use the sides rather than the bottom.

My aftermarket stylus is really tight and doesn't slip all the way on to the cartridge shaft (hmm ... might get arrested for writing descriptions like this!).

sorta way off topic :)

I love me some Ortofon... Spinning with one tonight. Concorde Pro S40

I probably log more hrs per week with the Concorde w/several slip-on styluses than any other cart on my SL1200

Spinning a new 'Hendrix In The West' Double LP tonight - pics
