i just picked up a nakamichi "high com ll" noise reduction unit at a yard sale (!) & i have no idea how to hook it to my existing system, for 2 reasons; 1, i already have an eq, & 2, my chemo treatments are working, but my brain cells aren't. i'm sure it's an easy set-up, but i'm drawing a blank. i have a pioneer sa-8500 ll integrated amp, & a pioneer sg-9 equalizer ( as well as 2 tape decks, 2 turntables & a tuner plugged into the amp ). the eq"in" goes to amp "pre-out". the eq "out" goes to the amp "power amp in". ( the eq "tape in/out" are unsed ). "the nakamichi has "line in" & "line out", as well as, "rec out" & "play in". your simple, direct instructions will be VERY much appreciated! thanks, walterwinter@hotmail.com

Hi, you can connect the noise reduction through the EQ's tape in/outs.
The NR's (NR = Noise Reduction) main in connects to the EQ's tape outs.
The NR's main outs connect to the EQ's tape ins.
Switch the EQ to "tape monitor" to hear everything through the NR.
This is all you need, and it will work, but I caution you on the responses yet to come your way about where you have your equalizer in the signal path.
Isn't the 8500-ll a great integrated? I'm listening to mine right now.

i appreciate the quick reply, but i'm still having problems. just to confirm, i didn't change or alter any of my existing wiring. i ran rca cables from the nr main "out" ( not the the "tape in/out" ) to the previously unused tape "play" on the eq, & the nr main "in" to tape "rec" on the eq, flipped on the eq "tape monitor" switch, but nothing happens. just to be thorough, i tried reversing the main "in" & "out", and even tried new cables. what did i do wrong?

I suppose you are going to have to find out first if your noise reduction unit works or is actually working.
Technically, your EQ is supposed to be connected to tape 1 or tape 2 inputs/outputs. It needs to be connected to a tape loop because it uses the line level "rec out" jacks that are not variable like your preamp outputs are.
Ok, so try this: Simply remove one of your tape decks from let's say tape 1 and connect your noise reduction unit there. Now flip your tape monitor switch up to tape 1 and put your selector on "tuner" and see if you get anything from your tuner through the NR unit.
If this works then I would connect your EQ to tape 1, put your tape 1 tape deck into the EQ's tape in/outs and your noise reduction unit at the "pre out/main in jacks.
Since the 8500ll doesn't have the ADAPTOR option like the SX-1010 and other receivers/amplifiers, this is probably the best option.

I suppose it would be helpful to know what this noise reduction unit is. It is a compander to be used with a tape deck, like an external Dolby encoder/decoder. As such, it is a two-pass process, not a noise reduction to be applied to all sources. As I understand it, you have two tape decks on your integrated amp on the tape loops, and an EQ between preamp and power amp sections.
Choose ONE of the tape decks you'd like to use with this compander. Unplug it from your integrated amp. Use the Main In and Main Out of the Nakamichi and connect it to the tape loop connections of the integrated amp. Then, hook the tape deck In and Out to the Tape In and Tape Out of the Nakamichi.
Record a tape using the Hi Com II, then play the tape back through the Hi Com II and enjoy the noise reduction it offers you.
Choose ONE of the tape decks you'd like to use with this compander. Unplug it from your integrated amp. Use the Main In and Main Out of the Nakamichi and connect it to the tape loop connections of the integrated amp. Then, hook the tape deck In and Out to the Tape In and Tape Out of the Nakamichi.
