How does one get BANNED?

IMO it's mostly attitude. if the words are wrong, one will get warned either by the general community or the mods. if one decides to ignore that and continue with 'words' then they are showing an inappropriate attitude and open themselves up the options available to the admins and mods. Again, just my opinion. In the words of Bill and Ted "Be excellent to each other" and you can't go wrong ;)

Your last sentence sums it all up.

Me think you have the wrong street, please turn right at the next light, :D

DAMN GPS. :D

Wow, not impressed by the less than helpful replies.

Well, sometimes when a poster doesn't really explain him/her-self completely, things get lost. I really didn't provide a direction, so it was mostly my fault.

No harm, No foul.

I think there is a serious reason when somebody has to leave the show. I do not think that somebody who has a good reputation get's banned when he disrespects a rule due to a reason we do not know (alcohol, acute mental crisis - however in such conditions we should not post anyway), if it is a single incident. Moderators respond in such situations from time to time with "You are warned!" or something like that.

I compare AudioKarma to a city with some 160000 residents. It is natural that in such a city live some... how do you say...morons(?)... and such fellows need an instant treatment - for the benefit of the entire community - when they become impertinent.

It is very difficult to rule a forum with such a number of members. If someone thinks that the moderators moderate the forum too stringent he should also consider how complex it is to rule such a huge forum generally in a well arranged manner.

Mods do good job here. AK is more civil than a lot of other forums because of that and most of the members .

There have been a couple of times I saw a thread locked and
maybe I didn't think it was quite at that point but looking back later maybe it was headed there anyway and worked out for the best.

In any event looking after 160k members in any capacity and keeping things civil can't be easy So I'm good with AK.
Thumbs up for the Mod's ,volunteers and Admins here :thmbsp:

I acted like a dick once and got banned, It can happen, but the point is to want to stay here and act accordingly.

If you make a habit of perusing old threads, you will eventually find posters who have banned written by their names. If you are curious (like me) you can click the person's name to view all posts by that person and try to figure out what happened. A certain percentage of the reason for doing that is just morbid curiosity, while simple self preservation is also in play (if you know where the line is, you can make sure you never cross it).

Unfortunately, threads bad enough to get someone banned are usually cleaned up by the mods to remove the offensive parts or even removed entirely, so that a forensic view of the banned member's posts may look like a guy was just going along being perfectly pleasant when BOOM!: he's banned.

I've learned the hard way that one man's banter can definitely be another man's insult [Apologies to all that I've unintentionally upset!]. As a matter of fact, the humor/humour that I was brought up on, was based on insults [e.g. "Look what the cat dragged in" - to a close friend!]. And, while I am not a predator, I sometimes feel the need to defend myself vigorously. So, as someone who must have sailed close to the wind, in the past, I must say that I have great respect for the job that our mods are constantly seen to be doing.

Cheers, og

I think the moderators do a utterly fantastic job on here, hence it's the most civil, respectful, and friendly audio site you could ever wish to visit,or join.

Some say you have to be banned at least once, or you're not for real. Those folks are the ones who have been banned at least once. :smoke:

Good point. Dealing with conflict can also be stressfull so not an easy task. I was curious about how it all works but totally appreciate and support the mods. I spend more time on this site than any other, it's that good.

On most other forums that I frequent,if the thread gets too contentious then the mods will lock it down and the members will be warned to cool it.

Generally speaking, if it's ban-worthy it gets deleted and/or cleaned up.

How does one get BANNED?

Two ways:

Break the rules with one really egregious act.
or
Wear the mod staff down over a prolonged period of not quite being able/willing to respect and get along with other members and the purpose of the forum.

People can be banned temporarily or permanently from all or part of AK at the discretion of the mod staff.

Hope this helps.

Threadcrapping, rude, disrespectful or anti social behaviour, making irrelevant posts that contribute nothing to the discussion at hand...etc. - all pretty much common sense.

Not much of a mystery.

Politics & religion - should also be avoided.
