How good are AR 4X speakers?

I have a few pairs of vintage speakers from around the late 50's early 60's(i'm guessing on vintage) , AR2a's, Jensen TF-3's, KLH 6 and maybe so others I haven't dug deep enough to see in a while. I have an oppurtunity to purchase a pair of AR 4X's for $30 that are suppose to be in excellent condition both sonically and physically. How would they stack up to the above mentioned speakers? better, worse or about the same? :scratch2:Thanks for your oppinions, john.

I have a pair that I recently picked up and I think they are pretty good little speakers. They aren't as big as the AR2a's or the KLH 6 (not familiar with the Jensens), and the bass and overall "amount of sound" suffers in comparison to those a little. The quality of sound is similar to the larger speakers, highs and midrange are good as long as the crossover components are up to spec. The main difference in my opinion is simply due to size of woofer and cabinet size.

But for their size, I think they perform really well. Great speaker for a bedroom or den/office system. And if they are in good shape, then $30 is a decent deal.

Much smaller bookshelf that the KLH 6's or the AR2's for sure but highly revered among vintage AR and "new england" speaker enthusiasts. I have a pair I use for a "3rd" set just to run off the receiver into another room and they sound great. Very good bass for a small speaker -- just have to keep the pots clean. Some bypass them. If they are in that good-a shape condition wise it might be nice......I'ld like to see what they'ld sound like stacked on those 6's or 2a's

I don't have much interested in new speakers, I know , my loss. Have you ever heard the Jensen's Zilch? Whoopass bass, even though it's a little mushy. I was very suprised and did not expect it from these bookshelf's about the size of the KLH 6. I think I will recap them and see if it tightens up the bass.
I believe both paris of my KLH 6's are early, but I haven't seen them for a while, they both need capacitors, 3 out of 4 tweets not singing.

It's a challenge figuring out how to crack into the early ones.... :thmbsp:
