Sucked? That's not at all how I would describe hearing various models Harry Pearson used at Sea Cliff. Capable of an immense soundstage with fabulous dynamics.
My objection was woofers sounded like they belonged to a different speaker. Mid bass continuity was not its forte.
I can assure you that HP's were always in good shape as Arnie tuned them. He had two different versions before moving to the similar Genesis One. Used Conrad-Johnson Premier One to power mains in the early days.
I've yet to hear any speaker sound larger than a symphony orchestra.
You're welcome to use your own reference. For me, that is the ultimate reference of what an audio system can do in every respect.

I truly wish I could spend thousands, I do not begrudge people that do either. Sometimes I get taken back when I see $1000 speaker wires and patch cables and such, but again, if I had the disposable income I GUARANTY that I would drop the cash as fast as I could.

Insane = more than <whoever defines it> would be able or willing to pay. By that criteria the gear I have is insane as nobody (outside a few audio-nuts) I know would spend any more than a couple of hundred bucks at Best Buy for an AV reciever.
What I don't get is why people are so concerned how others spend their money.
Merely commenting the price of something and being astounded at extremely high priced items is not being concerned.......it is just expressing wonder etc.
I could care less about what one spends on anything, but I reserve the right to comment on anything I find interesting or astounding. Merely wondering about the high price of anything (way beyond the market average) is probably pretty normal for most human beings I would imagine.

Allot of very unique people could care less about vinyls.
Those horrible words come to mind, as another person already mentioned - "what the market will bear".
A long time ago, I heard the McIntosh XRT22 and the B&W 801. I have heard very few speakers that would rival those for acoustic jazz, which I like. I've seen these Macs priced at $2000, and the B&W set at $4000. Let the Gulfstream set buy six figure speakers. If I find either pair, I'll pay less than the one percent's market price, and like it just fine.

The cost of high end goods in general has gone up quite a lot. A 1954 Gullwing Mercedes cost about $9000 in 1954 dollars, which is roughly $90,000 today.
There are many, many cars above $90k these days.

It's lineal descendant, the AMG GT-R runs a cool $159k. It was fun watching Lewis Hamilton do donuts on one at pit lane before the F1 race at COTA. His passenger had trouble getting out of the car afterwards.
You have zero idea how much I spent on my audio or other hobbies but thanks for using your imagination.
