Working on a restoration/re-cap of a Sansui Eight for a client. Since the main caps are such a large diameter, I wanted to re-stuff them with slightly larger and higher voltage caps (8200uF, 80V, 105C).
At my regular place of work we have a small machine shop which includes a lathe. I chucked the cap on the lathe and with a clamped dremel, I cut the cap open. I then removed the old cap. Drilled a couple holes for the leads of the new cap ( I had to extend the leads with buss wire). I used hot melt adhesive to hold the new cap in place, and soldered the new leads to the old leads. A strip of aluminum tape to hold the two pieces together. Once the clamp is in place, it is like nothing ever happened.
