How long does it take to make an amp?

I have a music curve d-2020-kt100 being made for me. It's been about two weeks since the company contacted me and said that they were going to get it in production.

My question is: should I contact them and ask for an estimated completion time, or is it too early to bother them?

Probably wouldn't hurt to ask for a estimated time of completion.

Ya, I just don't want to be bothersome... And it's not a pcb model, its point-to-point... so I don't know how that affects things

Point-to-point really slows down the process.PC builds are very quick.

OK, I was just kidding around above. It is a very beautiful amp and being it is built overseas, depending on demand, etc. I guess two weeks so far doesn't seem to be too unreasonable.

But I agree they could have at least said it will take such and such amount of time estimated...

I don't think you would be considered bothersome just asking state of progress. Just be friendly.

You can see if they actually give you a time estimate or just say, "Yankee, you pay now. You go home now. You wait!"

\:^)

Hehe. I already paid in full. My contact has been very polite ((( and even mostly understandable ))).

here's how it looks, btw... looks way more complex than i'd ever be willing to wire

This may not be a big company.

Depending on the size of the company, several factors might have to be taken into consideration.

Are there others waiting in line for an amp to be custom/hand made or are you their first and only customer?

How many hands are there in the building process? Only one pair at a time can work on it.

Do they have to order parts as needed or do they keep them in stock.

...maybe others as well.

It does look like a pretty amp, though.

Why, it's just as gorgeous on the inside as it is on the outside (actually, more to a techy like me\:^).

When I used to build test equipment for the company I used to work for, it would always look like that on the inside too when I got done. My boss thought I was wasting too much time on the neatness but he shut up after the head engineer came down from the Cities once and saw one of my pieces and complimented me on "pride of workmanship". I always made sure I polished all acrylic pieces too.

Anyway, yeah, it takes a lot more time to wire an electronical piece of equipment when you keep things nice and neat like that is than if you just put wire in there as the crow flies, so to speak. Looks like top-notch components too.

I have a good idea. When you take actual delivery of it, take pictures of your actual amp and post them here so we can "assess" whether or not their manufacturing techniques measure up to their pictures! \:^)

And your impatience is completely understandable waiting for a thing of beauty like that.

No problem. When i finally do get it, I'll make sure to post some pics.

They've promised me full schematics too, so i can post those when i get a chance ^_^

I know if you order an amp from Decware ware it takes 4 to 6 weeks. That is stated on their sight.

I guess i got my answer ^_^

Dear Tristen,

Thank you for your email.

The item Music Curve D2020-KT100 with cherry wood (point to point wiring) are ready now . We will sent the item out today and then I will inform you the tracking number information immediately.

Best Regards,

Molly

made to order, seems like they were pretty fast - you should be pleased. I am curious tho, I thought those were pretty much already built and ready to go and did not require ordering to be built ?

I ordered a point-to-point model. They're also a small company of only about 200 employees... where they very likely have a lot of their smaller items in stock, it's probably not advantageous to keep a lot of the large amplifiers around... anywho, here's the first email i got from them. I answered the questions, and a little while later, she said that she'd arranged for production of my amp. pretty good turnaround, i guess.

At last, there are two points for clarification:

1) Regarding the Music Curve D2020-KT88 with cherry wood, now we seldom use KT88 tubes. And we recommend to replace KT88 tubes with the KT-88-98 tubes, as KT88-98 tubes is the improved version of KT88 tubes, have better quality and stability than KT88 tubes. Meanwhile, you also can replace KT88 tubes with KT100 tubes. There are no extra cost for replacing KT88 tubes with the KT-88-98 tubes and KT100 tubes.

KT88-98 tubes and KT100 tubes, they give mellow and natural sound, especially better performance for low and intermediate frequency. They almost have same timbre
and similar appearance. KT88-98 tubes have better stability, but KT100 tubes have better soft sound.

2) Regarding the Music Curve D2020-KT88 with cherry wood, our factory default setting is PCB Welding. It is completely hand wired. Please find the detail description in the attachment. In fact, there is no difference between PCB Welding and Point to Point Welding about sound quality.

If you need Point to Point Welding, we can make it based on your requirements and the extra cost USD 20 should be charged.

3) Regarding the Music Curve D2020-KT88 with cherry wood, the default rectifying tube is 5Z3P, which can be upgraded to 5Z3PA without any extra cost. 5Z3PA tube have better quality and stability.

Please notice that we always pay more attention to every shipment and take full responsibility for our customer. So I need your confirmation for the above information.

Your great understanding and early reply will be highly appreciated.

Thanks and Best Regards,

Molly
