So how many Akr's out there collect coins? I've been a collector for many years now, and i'd love to see how many folks share in this hobby of mine. And what is your specific interest in the field? For the longest time i collected everything it seems. Now i'm trying to cut back on the crap and get focused on completing entire series. Also, paper money enthusiasts welcome here too!

I'm collecting all the state quarters, and whats left out there of the individual year quarters.

I only need 5 state quarters to complete my set which is Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, and New Jersey.

I forgot to say, I was getting lunch at school one day, and the lunch lady gives me my change and I see this old year quarter. I look at the date and at first I thought it said it was minted in 1902. But when I sit down and look at it better, I see that it was actually minted in 1892!

I've ended up with a collection by default...they just ended up here from various other family members not caring to keep them. I've done a quick count/inventory, but no real research at this point.

About a dozen Morgans among them, too.

I've been collecting coins for over 40 years.
At first.....it was everything in sight.
But for the last 20 years or so, I've narrowed my scope down considerably.
I have a soft spot in my heart, for the lowly 1/2 cent piece.
BTW: It's amazing what you can find at smaller, out-of-the-way flea markets.

Collected as a kid and although I haven't bought much of anything for years, I still have my little bit of everything collection plus a lot of newly minted stuff we've pulled out of change. Some day maybe the grand neices and nephews will get interested.

As for cool finds, my great aunt gave me some cool Civil War merchant tokens that I've never seen in books. I found a less common 1871 Indian head cent in a 10 cents each box at a coin store once, was worth about $20. Walking across a plowed field in the middle of campus (they were grading to make a new track) I spied a 1940 silver half dollar that had been unearthed.

sold most of my stuff in college. got the quarters; all 50 states plus DC; and some bits and pieces, incl some foreign. years ago someone put a Haiti quarter in the church collection plate and my mom got it for me. got cannons and palm trees. cool!
something like the below

Neat find there screenersam. "Liberty...Equality"... Haiti doesn't exactly live up to its ideals.

Not really a coin collector, but have picked up a few over the years. My oldest is a Constantine the Great c. 300 A.D.

I go mostly for early 20th century US sets. Got some nice pieces, best are uncirculated 1900-O and 1904-O Morgans, an 1814 half dollar, and an uncirc. 1899 nickel.

I worked at an auto parts store during the early 70s while going to college. Due to the proximity of farm ground to the store, many of our customers were farm laborers who worked the fields during the spring and summer, then went home to Mexico during the winter. It was common practice for them to cash their checks as soon as they got them, and take any leftover cash home when they went. Although silver had already been virtually phased out, quite often these guys would bring in silver dollars and other coins that they had taken home years ago, and brought back for their return trip. They'd spend them on auto parts in the store, and at the end of the day the manager would let me buy the silver out of the register.

I have 37 silver dollars of various years, and about another $50 or so of silver dimes, quarters, half dollars, and a bunch of buffalo nickels. None are rare collectibles, though.

Well, I dabble in the hobby, from time to time. Primarily uncirc's & proof sets. Oldest coin in the collection is an uncirc 1819 large cent. Oldest proof set - 1942. My grandfather worked in a bank, so that influence helped get me started.

A couple of examples:

awesome!
buddy of mind had a friend at a Delaware bank with an elderly custmr (back in the late 60s) with some gold $10 stashed away he'd deposit now and then. needless to say they got snapped up quick. the teller offered to buy them privately but the older gentlemen declined. I worked some retail and saw a bit of silver; not much.

I collected coins from the ages of 12 up into my late teens. Nothing too exciting in my collection, as I was just a kid, but I have a nice example of everything that is readily available in American silver. Probably my best find was when I was walking along the Gettysburg battlefield and found a 1916 standing liberty quarter! That one commands a few dollars more as it was the only year in that this quarter was minted depicting liberty with an exposed breast! I basically got out of it as I purchased all that was affordable, ie less than fifty bucks a coin. Still have them, though.

Got any pics of the 1916 quarter? That thing is worth thousands even if it's worn out, with a barely readable date. My favorite coin, BTW. :thmbsp:

I have SEEN, & held in my hot little hands, an 1893-S Morgan, that WOULD be XF-AU if it didn't have these awful gashes on her cheek...The most rare coin I have is a $3 gold piece, its VF-XF. Oughta send it to ANACS, but I just haven't. Still think the prettiest coin is my 1927 St. Gaudens $20...I lucked up & got a very "frosty" uncirculated specimen...
