How much better are Double Advents

Not to speak for Rickman, but I am guessing that he is referring to stacked Advents, which there is a lot of discussion about here (mostly positive).

FWIW, maybe you can find another AK'er close to you with a set and make a stack between the two of you. Stack them tweeter to tweeter and I run them in parallel via jumpers connecting like terminals. Then sit back and enjoy the music.
There is an early review on Absolute Sound that had high praise for the stacked Advents.
I've a pair now and thinking about building stands. The question then becomes, how tall for the speaker stands to the base plate for the speaker?
Nakdoc answered another question I had - how to orient the stack.
I figure that my quad Marantz at 40 wpc would be a good amp (in two channel mode) for the stacked units.

At one point I had my Advents sitting on top of my HMP-100s. At that height and not inverted, just by themselves they sounded really airy, almost spacey. Wasn't bad just different, kinda even liked it. With the HPMs, they really filled out.
I also tried the Advents on 6 inch stands. For my taste I like them sitting on the floor up next to the wall the best.

They're almost as good as triples.
This is what I have now. They sound great although the difference between doubles and triples is not as dramatic as between singles and doubles.
The vertical positioning becomes less critical and, in fact, I like to have the bottom pair right on the floor for maximum deep bass.
I also have them all oriented upright at the present to see how I like that arrangement. I did have them bottom pair upright, middle pair upside down, and the top pair upright for quite a while.
To me, each added pair makes the speakers disappear more and the sound is just "there". More like a live event. :thmbsp:

Typical prices are anywhere from $75 to $125 a pair in good working condition.
"Project" Advents run from $25 to $50 a pair. Higher is a mistake, unless the cabs, grills, and badges are all PERFECT.

If all you have is two Advents, another trick is to use stands about two feet high and mount the speakers upside down, so the tweeters are at seated ear height and the woofers are above that, well out from behind the end of the sofa or other sound absorber. That puts the music source a little 'above' your ears, which is about where it would be in a live performance.
I now do this routinely with all speakers, not just Advents, and it seems to help the soundstage. :yes:

I hadn't listened to Advents since college when my roommate had a pair. I had a pair of cheap Fisher 3 ways and we stacked them, running my speakers off my cheap Fisher receiver, slaved to the big Pioneer that ran the Advents. We thought we were the ****! It really did sound great. So when I built a bedroom system this winter using a pair of Advents, it got me to thinking.... Reading this forum, more thinking....
At any rate, a pair of stacked Advents replaced my Pioneers as the main speakers in my HT system. And, as suggested in this forum, they are wired in parallel, with the top pair upside down. I can say that the sound is really great, although it is clearly relatively inefficent from a power consuming standpoint. You really need at least 60 WPC to run this setup well. But I have $200.00 in 2 pairs, freshly refoamed when I got them, and I would defy anyone to find a better sounding set of speakers for less than a grand.

Definitely worth it. The sound is intoxicating. No other speaker anywhere near the price comes close to the overall effect, and the bass is staggering. Be sure to recap them. I was intimidated by the thought of doing it myself but, after watching tutorials on soldering and reading about how to do it, I finally recapped my 4 NLAs and it turned out to be much easier than I expected. I've also become expert at resurrounding the woofers, even with the surround going under the cone. The sound is worth all of this. I also must point out that they sound best when pushed by a high current amplifier with at, or close to, 200 watts per side and wired in parallel so that they operate as a single speaker.
