How much did I overpay?

Recently bought a Harman Kardon ST-8 on eBay for 595$. Description explains it was recently serviced and "dialed in". Original feet replaced with Sorbathane feet. Comes with 3 cartridges Grado GF3, Grado ZF3, Signet Audio Technica 1EA. Also no cartridge alignment tool or carriage cover.

From earlier posts on her and vinylengine. About 350-400 or so is the best price point. I don't regret my purchase, I just want some other opinions

Good point, I overpaid but I still believe its worth it to me. I plan on keeping it for a while anyway. So it doesn't hurt to start out on the right foot.
 
Rarity, condition, and the desire to have something all come into play. I've bought good and poorly for more and less than "market". I like a good deal, but some times I just want! Enjoy, and welcome to AK.

You didn't overpay by too much. Heck, some people think buying new is overpaying. I look at it as you being over-enthusiastic. Enthusiast are always welcome. Just don't let it happen next time.

Thanks! I definitely was over enthusiastic. Will not happen again
 
If you find something in the condition you want when you want it then I don't see a bit higher than usual as overpaying. You might have had to wait forever to find another one or maybe never would have.
I have over payed a few times only to watch the item jump by several hundred dollars over the next few months so all of a sudden I got a good deal. With vintage you just never know.
 
Everyone overpays sometimes for something they really want - no worries. As long as you are happy with it, just enjoy.

P.S. Saying that I checked your Harman Kardon ST-8 turntable on eBay.
Your pictures show incomplete turntable (missing a small plastic cover, that says "Rabco"). Rabco is famous linear-tracking tonearm. I attached photo of this cover from my ST-6.
If this Rabco cover, indeed, missing, it means seller misrepresentation, since he never mentioned it.
Granted, this cover holds not very tight and easy to miss over the year.
However, the TT is incomplete and definitely not in "Excellent shape".

I hate eBay seller misrepresentation. When they prey on inexperienced people.
Ask him if he has this cover. If not, you have ground to return TT.
Even cover doesn't affect sound, if affects collectibility (so price).

Condition is everything, Ill keep that in mind. I actually did ask him about the cover and he said he had a st7 for parts that had the cover on it. Wasnt quite excellent condition but better then sitting unused for decades.

You never know, I did balk a bit when I read a post from 2003 saying a mint st7 was 40$ or something like that. Absolutely ridiculous compared to now.
 
Reading back in the day prices is good for a laugh but definitely no good for anything except wishing you had a time machine to go back and fill a warehouse with the stuff that reached cult status a decade later.
 
overpaying? does everything you buy have to be the lowest and do you have to make money
when you sell? ​

it shouldn't be about the money, it's about the enjoyment and the music.

way too many times everyone wants some high-end unit at some low prices, and always sell
for a gain.

if you own it, and derive enjoyment and the music sounds better then that's all it should be.

I don't think you overpaid all that much, sounds like got a nice fully functional unit. I have seen the go as High as $650-900 dollars in excellent condition with all accessories. I have an ST-8 I bought new in the late 70's and it still Rocks! Replacing belts soon but other than that it been a nice reliable unit.
