I know it is hard to pin figures down so just come up with a rough number. Include everything you buy for your audio hobby. If you make one big purchase a year and a lot of little ones just average it out to the monthly amount.

I have a feeling if my wife new what I was spending she would not be happy. :D

I hear you, just make your best educated guess. There are some months where I have hardly spent more than a few bucks for some lp's others where I have spent well more than the mortgage payment. :thmbsp:

I never make huge purchases... I can't afford to. I really don't have any money to spend on this hobby. I flip things I find at sales not for the money, but to reinvest in gear that interests me. Although this past couple of months I used the proceeds to buy a new tent and a couple of old 35mm cameras, and now I'm on the warpath for a telescopic lens, about a 2500mm, so my son and I can take pictures of the moon.

My ebay balance (where I have been doing most of this stuff lately barring a few private deals) says I sold $330, and paid $500... I'm in the hole, but it's not too bad. this is an unusually active month for me, I would roughly estimate $20, as I said I really try to balance incoming and outgoing, otherwise I wouldn't be able to do it.

I think you need to distinguish between operating costs and capital expenditure (or investment). If I buy a $1000 receiver and sell it for the same amount six months later, it is probably not good accounting to count the $1000 as an operating cost.

I figure if I ever need to I can sell off everything I have and get all my money back and more. I have also moved through a lot of lesser gear as I move into what I consider more collectable and what I like.

Good point. Lets just say what you buy and keep and of course this is just a rough estimate. Also include repair expenses and the like.

I need to start learning how to sell stuff.. I've got so much laying around now... and more in transit to me, and getting ready to start bidding on a few auctions.. and best part is.. one auction is next month, and is for a nice pair of A7's :D

I have moved a lot of stuff on craigslist. Some deals I make money and sadly some deals I lose but then again I am happy to get it out of my hair and make someone happy.

That's a very good point... I guess really I have a couple thousand (the core collection) in holdings that could be liquidated as needed, but on a month to month basis I'm anywhere from $20 to $200 in the hole. Hardly ever in the black. I have had a few spectacular flips, but only one or two a year. They have been used mainly to keep things flowing.

I've been going after some of my "holy grail" LPs lately, so I've been spending over $100 a month just on vinyl.

Not trying to steal your sources, but where are you finding vinyl? I've been finding some at yard sales, but not a whole lot.. or are you hitting the record stores? THe thrifts I've been hitting has all the stuff I don't listen too..

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but what are some examples? If you feel like sharing. I can tell from some of your posts that you are man of taste.

I was thinking on the basis of operating cost and I estimate that I'm supporting my record buying and easily breaking even over the last year with moving alot of stuff I'm not using and junque over craigslist. I try to make enough in the sales to cover the dozen or so records I buy per week, and it's fun to share the gear with others. An exception being opportunities I've had to make alot of $$ flipping <cough> BOSE gear.

I need to take you to Orpheus in Arlington. I know Ken has some other good places he goes.

most months's under a hundred bucks.. but if a piece needs to go in for service, of course that blows it for that month. plus, I hate having gear that needs service in the house.. so i get it in for repairs ASAP.

Cool.. thanks for turning me onto that... but man I hate paying record store prices.. I love those garage sales where you can get 5 for $3 and they are all in really great condition :D

At least now I know where I can find anything special I'm looking for since Tower closed..

From Janurary to September, on average about $25 on music (2 new CDs, handful of vinyl).
October, spent $900 on gear. But sold $625 worth of stuff. If I sell one more receiver, I'll be even.

I rarely buy from Orpheus but it is nice to see things that you will never find at the garage sales and everything is close to mint. If you buy several they work out to about $3-$4 an album.

90 in the spring, nothing all summer, 500 next month and then it will be nothing for a while.
