How to DVM. Help!

I am looking for a recommendation for a book that would clearly explain how to use a DVM. Here is the story:

This past weekend I visited my sister and Tom my brother-in-law. Tom just bought a DVM but does not know how to use it for some of the relays and solenoids. He asked me if I knew of any books that would explain the basic uses of a DVM.

I looked in my library and did not have any basic books on how to use a DVM. I searched the web, but did not find a site that I felt would serve Tom's needs. Amazon has several books, however, I am not familiar with them and therefore reluctant to recommend them.

Please help me recommend a good DVM book for Tom. Thanks.

The meter should have come with a basic instruction booklet. It should explain the basic functions of the meter. For anything more than that you probably need a book on basic electronics. In other words, the meter is easy to use but you need to have some idea on what to expect from what you are testing. Is there something specific? Relays and solenoids are very basic checks. The coils should have a specific amount of resistance and the relay contacts, when closed, should have no resistance at all.

I can recommend an excellent book for anyone who wants to learn electronics: The Art of Electronics, by Horowitz and Hill
Here is their website: http://www.artofelectronics.com/
The book is written in an almost conversational manner. They allow you to omit the more advanced math and just get the main idea and theory, but the math is presented for a deeper understanding.

Thanks for the thoughtful replies.

dr*audio,

The Art of Electronics sounds like an interesting book. At $75 a copy, it may be beyond my brother-in-law's interest. I will pass the recommendation on to him.

Pete,

You are of course correct about relays and solenoids. He tried to measure them and got results he did not expect. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to walk him through the simple tests while I was visiting. I may try to do so via e-mail.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Radio Shack has a "How to use your Meter" book for around $8-10. Pretty much spells it out step by step.

Dear cabinover,

One of the first places I checked for books was Radio Shack online. I did not find any books having to do with DVMs. I tried again using the "How to use your meter" in their search bar and again came up with nothing. Do you have a specific part number for the book you mentioned? Thanks.

Try this, part number 62-2039.
The title is Using Your Meter by Alvin J. Evans.
It covers both VOM and DVM, $6.99

Dear cabinover,

I tried the number on the Radio Shack website. No luck.

Radio Shack used to have quite a few publications that covered various aspects of electronics but, they have really cut back on not only the books but also the components (resistors, capacitors, etc.,) that they stock in the stores. Thanks for the part number. I may try to find a copy on ebay.

Sincerely yours,

Finally found this book again, along with thread

My local RS has this book in stock if you still need one. Let me know and I'll pick one up for you. Bob
