how to get shine back to a black front panel??

I am restoring a HK 6650R integrated amplifier. I have washed the front panel but it doesn't look good, it looks dull, no shine to it. I am not sure what is the best approach to getting that original look back. It seems to me that most car products would not be appropriate. And what would apply to a silver panel certainly would not apply to this panel as the surfaces are not the same. The last thing I want to do is experiment and ruin the panel without recourse. I don't want anything that could remove the lettering.
Has anyone here been in this situation and had a successful outcome and can share how they did it.

About 30 years ago when cleaning up an old ham radio for resale, I was advised to use Blue Coral liquid car wax to shine up the metal face plate (front panel) and case. Works like a charm. Be careful not to rub off any decals or other markings, though; doesn't need much buffing. And of course use the proverbial "soft cloth". I believe this would last longer than Armor All.
