how to get this top piece out to service preamp?

1961 custom electra iv. preamp has most likely a cap that needs replacement. i've pulled the amp and i've pulled the knobs and have taken the screws out that holds the preamp in. i can see a metal brace that holds the preamp in and so it has to be pulled straight up and out. but, this top piece just barely moves and may just slide out, but i don't want to break it. i don't see any further screws holding it in place.

also the garrard tt doesn't stop even with the switch but it does drop the vinyl.

any recommendations?

2 screws in the side of the wood cover holds the top on. Unscrew them and slide about 3/8" to Right and angle up from free side. Then 2 screws on the chassis mount on top, and 2 sheet metal screws at bottom of chassis. Pull straight up AFTER Disconnecting all wiring. .

the 2 screws are inside the cab itself? must be the ones thru the cleat. there are 3 screws sideways into the cleat and 3 from below into the cleat. is that what you mean? i've already disconnected the wiring. last step is to get the preamp out. thanks, i'll check it out.

No. On the side of the preamp box facing the turntable look for 2 screws, high up on the side about 1" in from front and back. Remove those and slide/angle the top out. The top WILL fight you as it's a very tight fit. Just be more persuasive than the top. You won't break it (unless you're a 400# gorilla and pump iron :))

those actually 5 screws by the TT were the first i took out. ok, so i guess the top has been in there for 60 years and just doesn't want to come out. i'll have to be more forceful. thanks,
 
Open the top. As you are looking at the preamp face, there is a wall to the right side, which leads DOWN to the Turntable. This side face has 2 screws on the front and back, about 1" down from top, and 1" in from the ends, and they screw into a cleat on the front face. They're damed near invisible (you can feel them, but without a flash light you can't really see them. Take them out. Then lift up on the RIGHT EDGE of the FRONT FACE of the PREAMP COVER PANEL about 1/2" or so. Yank the whole shebang to the right (the knob shafts want to get in the way, so lift it up higher, until it completely clears the left edge. Then lift straight up. When you get the cover off, you'll need to remove the 2 screws on the panel on the RIGHT SIDE of the CHASSIS, that attach it to the vertical wood panel. Don't lose the spacers. And don't forget the 2 lower screws (in the phono compartment or below) They screw into the lower edge of the chassis.

This pic is from my 64 Electra. Basically the same procedure as your 61.

5, actually 6 including the adaper holder, screws taken out previously. no further screws seen. yes, i'd been able to lift it about 1/4" but it won't release from the left edge since it has been there about 60 years.
i've been able to shove a coaster in there to give me some space but it isn't helping.
someone told me that it comes out below and so i took the back panel off but nothing there but cabinet. i'll try to see if i can loosen the top a little bit from inside the cabinet since i have the back off. thanks for bearing with me. can't believe how difficult it is to get this off just to replace probably one cap or two.
 
Your on the right track. Grab the right side (where the coaster is). Wiggle it up and down a bit, while pulling to the RIGHT!(Toward the turntable). It's super tight! It'll come out. When you go to put it back in, run a bar of soap (ivory, dove, but not LAVA!) along the left edge, bottom and top. This will help get it back in, and make it slightly easier for your grandkids to get it back out.:D

It looks like the power hinge may be impeding the top plate from coming out straight. Undo the bottom attachment, and tape it to the top cover of the unit (or remove the top completely).

The slot was made with a straight cut, and you're removing and installing the top cover at a slight angle (hence the tightness). If need be, take a piece of 2x4 and put it up against the right side of the tuner escutcheon, and smack it with a dead blow hammer, near the center. You'll need a shim to keep the cleat up higher than the side so it will come out. A couple of construction shims will do.
