How to Glue Rubber Mat to Metal Platter???

UnGrounded

Well-Known Member
The headline says it all.

I'm restoring a turntable for a friend.

It is a mid-1960's Magnavox turntable (Collaro made) from a very early Astro-Sonic.

The rubber mat has completely separated from the metal platter and now the mat is starting to curl.

Today I removed the platter, dabbed some rubber cement on it (the only adhesive I have the house aside from wood glue!), flipped the platter upside down, stacked some heavy objects on top of it and let it cure for a couple hours... the moment I picked it up, the rubber mat immediately began to curl up. I guess rubber cement / contact cement isn't the answer.

Anyone have a recommendation for a decent adhesive for reattaching plastic/rubber to metal? Epoxy?

Weldwood contact cement, after getting all of the rubber cement off and gone.

Permanent or no?

I used poster mounting tape (very thin, sticky on both sides) to fasten down a Technics mat that had started to curl. Worked just fine and is removable.

I have used Permatex Ultra Black with stellar results.

You need ULTRA because the consistency allows it to be spread ultra thin yet it will still bond and/or seal when spread thin. I have also used it with success repairing tears in Driver Foam on Speakers. Again, because you can spread it so thin, and it maintains rubbery consistency without hardening to a brittle state. Perfect for speakers and also steel to rubber platter to mat bonds. It bonds very well, but if you ever need to remove it, you can with some patience and a good putty knife.

You can get Permatex Ultra Black from any auto parts store or from Amazon:

Did you apply the contact cement to both surfaces allow to dry to the touch and then stick them together?

Yeah, I had learned from gluing tolex to wooden speaker cabinets with contact cement that the glue needs to get semi-solid first.

I thought I had let it get tacky enough, but I guess not.

I just cleaned off the old gunk and reapplied a new layer... I'll let it sit over night and see where I am in the morning.

Thanks, everyone.

You need to assemble them after a short drying period, overnight is too long.

I should have been more clear, sorry about that.

I applied the contact cement and let it sit for about 10 minutes, then I added the mat.

Anyway, the contact cement worked out great overnight.

I guess for a glue that is "instant" it needed quite a bit longer to set.

Thanks again for your help!
