How to Hook up Four Speakers (JBL & KLIPSCH)?

I would like to hook up 4 speakers to my Yamaha V667. I have a pair of Klipsch Cornwalls and JBL 80T's. Can I hook up my Cornwalls to the speaker terminals directly to the receiver, and hook up my JBL's through the pre-outs via a power amp? Will that work? Thanks!

It should work fine if using the preamp outs doesn't automatically turn off the internal amp section.

I've done it more than once with receivers that had preamp outs/main ins connected with jumpers. I just replaced the jumpers with splitters and ran half back to main in and half to the separate power amp.

Connect a pair to the front speaker terminals and the other pair to the rear terminals. If you use the preouts to a power amp, I would assume that you will bypass the receiver's internal amp and therefore bypass the speaker terminals, but I am not familiar with that A/V receiver.

It looks like your receiver has zone 2 connections which may not bypass the internal amp. Read the manual.

The owners manual should tell you everything you need to know. If you don't have the OM, it should be available on the Yamaha website. My Yamaha A/V receiver has speaker terminals for A and B on the fronts. Yours may not.

If you buy a 2 channel amp with more than one set of speaker jacks, connect one pair to A and the other to B. Check the impedance of both pairs and the capability of the amp to drive a load other than 8 ohms before using both pairs at the same time.

Welcome to AK.

This is exactly how I insert a powered sub into the equation. It works great. Ya just gotta love those MMF splitters.

Wanna have some fun, keep an eye out for one of these ...

Gives you two fully isolated and balanced sets, with bonus Hafler effect to add ambiance.

I believe you failed to mention where the speakers will be located. Two sets in the same room would benefit with the above box, but a remote set in another room would suffer as it wouldn't be pure stereo there ...

DO be sure to do the math when it comes to ohms and phasing over the array. That can be tricky, and some amps don't play well with this sort of thing.

Yes, the speakers are in the same room. The amp is a QSC PLX 2402. Here are the specs:
  • Stereo mode/both channels driven: 8 ohms 20Hz-20kHz 0.03 THD/425W; 4 ohms 20Hz-20kHz 0.05 THD/700W; 2 ohms 1kHz 1 THD/1200W
  • Bridge mono mode: 16 ohms 20Hz-20kHz 0.1 THD/850W; 8 ohms 20Hz-20kHz 0.1 THD/1500W; 4 ohms 1kHz 1 THD/2400W
  • Signal to noise (20Hz-20kHz):<-106 dB
  • Input sensitivity @ 8 ohms: 1.0Vrms
  • Input sensitivity @ 4 ohms: 0.9Vrms
  • Voltage gain: 40x (32 dB)
  • Output circuitry: 2-StepClass H
  • Distortion (SMPTE-IM): less than 0.01
  • Distortion (typical): 20Hz-20kHz: 10 dB below rated power--less than 0.01 THD; 1.0kHz and below: full rated power--less than 0.01 THD
  • Frequency response: 20Hz-20kHz, +/- 0.2 dB/8Hz-50kHz, +0, -3 dB
  • Damping factor: greater than 500
  • Input impedance: 6K ohms unbalanced, 12K ohms balanced
  • Input clipping: 10 Vrms (+22 dB)
  • Cooling: variable-speed fan, rear-to-front air flow
  • Input: 3-pin XLR 1/4-in. TRS balanced
  • Output: Neutrik Speakon(TM) and touch-proof binding posts
  • Amplifier protection: full short circuit, open circuit, thermal, ultrasonic, and RF protection
  • Load protection: on/off muting, DC-fault power supply shutdown
