How to pack a behemoth (aka heavy MF amp)

reneborg

I'm Vintage Too
Got home today and found my Yamaha M-4 amp was waiting for me. It had been to Dave's for some Avionic treatment.

I just wanted to post some pics of what a wonderful job Dave did packing it -- it went all the way from Iowa to upstate NY with nary a scratch and I think a sleeping baby would have made the trip without even noticing the ride.

The pics from left to right:
Size of the box (amp is ca. 48 lbs naked); Top view with padding; Top view showing layers of padding; Padding on sides; Bottom layer had this thick piece (plus another). You can also see it was double boxed.

Not shown, the amp itself was in plastic bag, also lovingly surrounded by Styrofoam all around.

That is nice packing.
The only thing that prevents me from buying an amp somewhere else is packing.
The packing I would probably get would be nothing like what is pictured here.

Yes, that's how I pack amps and have never had a damage claim, knock on wood now that I've said this. I would have used full length sheets in the fourth photo to give the outer box corners support. The corners can crush and this is typically how gear gets damaged.

The small inner box is what it was shipped to me in..(with a couple small pieces of styrofoam).I was totally amazed to see no damage..The inner box I packed had 1.5" of solid Styrofoam sheeting surrounding a plastic wrapped amplifier.

I'm pretty sure I hold the record for over packing an M-4...right Dave.:D

Ahh yep.No comparison.Aircraft avionic shipping containers made to withstand flightline gorilla's...

see the 1st post:yes:

hm.. i dont see how bubble wrap would be better than styrofoam.. why not just fill the box with baloons! :lmao:

I got a Fisher that was packed with balloons (those weird air pillows), a bunch of them burst during shipping. Not a pretty sight. The balloons are OK, but not for heavy items.
